Please remove inactive volumes in order to use the disk

I’ve just added a fourth hard drive (all are 4TB WD drives) to my new 516. It’s configured in factory default X-RAID. I’m getting the message “Please remove inactive volumes in order to use the disk.” I’m a little confused by this message.

The “System > Volumes” page shows four drives on the left. The bottom drive (I installed them from the bottom up.) has a green round dot in the top left and is called “data.” It shows:
    Data: 2.71TB
    Free 4.56 TB
    Type: RAID 5

The one above that has a red round dot in the top left and is called “2.” It shows:
    Data: 0
    Free: 0
    Type: RAID 5

The two above that are both the same with a red round dot in the top left and no name. They both show:
    Data: 0
    Free: 0
    Type: RAID unknown

According to the ReadyNAS OS 6.2 Software Manual:
Horizontal expansion is available for X-RAID volumes only. To horizontally expand an X-RAID volume:

Add a disk to an X-RAID volume that includes two or more disks.

The system automatically determines whether the new disk is used for protection or storage. When you add a second disk, the new disk is used for data protection. When you add a third or fourth disk, the new disk is used to increase your storage capacity. For more information, see X-RAID on page 21. New disks are incorporated in the background while you continue to use your storage system.

The only option I have when I click on settings on the drives is to “DESTROY” them. My questions:
  1. Does “remove inactive volumes in order to use the disk” mean I should “DESTROY” it?

  2. If so, should I do this (DESTROY) for all three disks with the small red circles? The data pie charts of all three are solid blue (no apparent data).

  3. Sorry for the long question. Thanks for your help.

You would want to do this just for the disk you just added. All the data on the disk will be lost as it is wiped.

The disk you added must have already been formatted.

    Do you have a backup?
  • Yes, all the data on the 516 has been copied from an old ReadyNAS Pro. The newly added disk is brand new.

That disk must have been partitioned/formatted somewhere e.g. by the disk manufacturer.
  • Aha! I installed it in my Mac just to verify it before putting it in the ReadyNAS. That's what happened. Thank you. I'll make a note for next time.

If you do check it before adding, be sure to delete the partitions off the disk before putting it in the NAS.

Creating a partition or even formatting it only will tell you it might not be bad which isn't much.
