ReadyNAS 312 Vertical Expansion - First Time

We needed to upgrade a client from their existing 2Tb Raid 1, to a 6Tb Raid 1. I verified that the WD Black 6Gbs were in the acceptable (compatible: http://kb.netgear.com/20641/ReadyNAS-Hard-Disk-Compatibility-List?cid=wmt_netgear_organic) list, and they were. Replaced the first, and as expected, over the course of a few hours, I went from degraded, to synced, and working fine without any issues. Second drive arrived the next day, and feeling confident in the process, I swapped the other drive. This process also went smoothly, and as I got home, the drive finished syncing, and showed a full Raid 1 mirrored condition. Still being a little wary of the expansion process, I verified that the system saw the new drives as full size, and they did. Both disks show at approx 5.5 TB. So, reboot. And Reboot. And Reboot.... And nothing.

I've restarted approximately 8 times since the second drive was loaded, including at least one 24 hour window, with no change. The NAS shows no signs of "expanding" its size, or adjusting to the correct amount available. I thought that maybe, since it was running almost full (don't they always wait until the last moment to approve things?), I needed to clear a little space. So, deleting some older backups, I cleared 350Gb to work with. No change. What am I missing? I've had the company spend the money on two 6Tbs, and they don't have 6Tb to work with... Ideas? thanks!

Just manually triggered the RAID array to expand to use the additional space on the disks. Once this is complete the volume should then expand.

Sometimes the btrfs file system needs to be manually expanded - not sure why.  There are some ssh commands you could try if you are willing.

Did you purchase between 1 June 2014 and 31 May 2016?  If so, you have free lifetime chat support, which you might want to use.

Backing up the data, doing a factory default, and then restoring the data is another avenue.

I suggest PMing @mdgm-ntgr, and seeing if he is willing to look at your logs.

Thanks for the rapid response! I checked our records, and we purchased this unit in April of 2014 Smiley Sad . So, no free chat for me! But, it sound like you've got the knowledge to assist, if you have the time and patience 🙂  .

Sorry, I started yesterday, but had to run to another call. Reply again at your convenience, and let me know what information you need, and where I can start, please. Thanks for your assist!

I can point you to other posts, but I don't work for Netgear and can't really offer direct support - just advice.

Re: ReadyNAS 312 Vertical Expansion - First Time

It's easy first take your time and be patient!!!

312 that means only 2 HDD if I remember!

1 step for RAID 1 prepare your 2 new HDD

2 extract first HDD from the 1 st tray of the array and replace by the new one then put it back

Warning message will flash you'll go from dedundant to degraded, then after 5hrs around be back to redundant!

3 same thing for disk 2

Warning message will flash you'll go from dedundant to degraded, then after 5hrs around be back to redundant and then automatically it will expand the volume 5 extra hours!

voila

regards!

I forgot TAKE YOUR TUME BE PATIENT!

A friend of mine a complete jackass lost 4Tb by doing taking of all his disks thinking that the device will trun back his datas in the thin air!

The new disk must be new or if recycled Low level formated!

Re: ReadyNAS 312 Vertical Expansion - First Time

thanks for the replies 🙂  Unfortunately, the first part of the process you describe went cleanly as planned, but the second part (the expansion) still apears to be non-constructive. MDGM has been kind enough to reply to my PM, and I hope to get this resolved this week. I'll update here as we (he) progresses. Thanks!

Re: ReadyNAS 312 Vertical Expansion - First Time

Unfortunately, very little except giving him my security code, and verifying that the NAS didn't magically expand over the weekend heheh. I've rebooted several times with no change now, except emails letting me know "It's down! " and "It's up!" 🙂  Oh well, we'll see how things go. My client isn't concerned, and knows we'll get it handled shortly, so no major deal.

A resync is now taking place. The volume should then expand.

BE PATIENT, the procedure is somewhat long!

NG nerds should warn users that it is taking quite some thours and to complete the procedure days!

From 8 to 14 To, it tokk me a week.

1 raid 1 array 4 to 6To

2x 1 raid 1 array 2 to 4 To!

My problem wasn't patience waiting, it was that it wasn't doing anything. No resync, no expansion in progress, no nothing 🙂  Fortunately, @mdgm-ntgr is a lifesaver 🙂

No worries, I have that problem on a regular basis heheh. Besides, I learned long ago to never ignore advice. You never know when it'll come in handy 🙂
