ReadyNAS 316 HDD Temperature Solved - Ugly but functional
I've been a ReadyNAS user since before Netgear bought them and have always been a fan but also had to cope with several expensive failures. Temperature has always been the main killer of my devices. I ended up buying a 316 as the 2100s I had simply didn't work outside a super cooled Comms room. Anyway even the 316's cooling is terrible.
In our office Comms room, at an ambient temp of 18 celsius the innder disks were still running at around 40 degrees. That is poor especially as I want to use this at home. The device is full of 4TB drives which run very hot.
Anyway, at home at 26-28 ambient (its under the stairs), the disks were running at 48 degress with no activity except from the super annoying log writing.
I finally stuck an 80mm fan at the front (with the door open) and fixed with some thin nylon ties, not too tight. Its still very quiet, ugly as sin but now my inner drives are cooler than my outer ones:
In order 41, 38, 35, 36, 40, 42

Which brand and model disks are these? 48 degrees is within the operating temperature range for the disks.
