ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot

No, removing the new disk has no effect.  It does not return to its previous state where it was working perfectly.  In fact, I also tried removing all of the disks, just to see if I could get it to do something different, but I keep getting the same result.  I reboot by unplugging, plugging then powering up by pressing the power button.  The green lights on the front of the unit corresponding to drives #1 and #3 light up, even when there are no drives inside.  The lower window on the front of the unit stays dark and now, in addition, I hear a grinding sound, which is a new development.  And after booting up, no matter how long I press the power button, it will not power down unless I unplug.  Cant get to the files.  It doesnt show up on the network.

I thought it was okay to go up in size with the new drive, but I just wouldnt get the additional space until I replaced all of the drives with the same increased capacity.  Is that wrong?  I'm not sure of the current firmware, but it was last updated about two years ago.  Can't get into it to see what firmware I'm currently running.

I dont have any back-up of the data.  It is full of CD's I have ripped and I stilll have all of the CD's.  So, if I lose the data on the NAS, it will be a pain to rip the entire 2,500 CD collection again, but at least I have the data.
