Slow transfer in an odd situation
Hello all,
I am surprised by the slow performance of my ReadyNAS in a particular task.
My question are: Is what I described below expected? should I let it complete or can I cancel, change settings, and start again? My guess is that the speed increase I would get would not net a fast enough transfers that would finish in less time than is remaining.
Systems:
I am moving (not copying) a 365 GB file from one share to another on the NAS. It started yesterday morning and said 18 hours remaining. If my math and formulas are correct that would have been 5.6 MB/sec. I considered that acceptable as it was from and to the same drive. This morning about 20 hours later, it has only completed 208 GB of the 365. Thats 2.7 MB/sec.
More Details:
I have had the problem of TimeMachine saying there is an error in my TimeMachine file and basically only allowing the creation of a new backup for my iMac. I thought it was because I was using WiFi, so I hardwired the iMac, but it continued. (this is a different problem for a different forum). The sparse bundle from the abandoned back up is mountable and I can access files within it. Recently, TimeMachine warned that I was running low on space. I decided to move the sparse bundle from the TimeMachine share to a separate share, where after a period of time, I would eventually delete it when I was sure I did not need a file from it.
I connected to the ready NAS using Finder as the TimeMachine ID and password using AFP and connected again as guest using CIFS and dragged the sparse bundle (as a Move) front he AFP to the CIFS.
Thoughts? (other than laughter--which I deserve)
Update at 10:00am:
Since my previous post at 7am (3 hours ago) 3 GB have transferred. If that holds, I am 155 hours from finishing. The data is not critical, but I am considering canceling the move, and it the original sparse bundle is still there, then try moving it to an attached USB hard drive. If not I will just delete it and go on with life. I am still curious as to why it is so slow. (so I can avoid it the next time when it might be important data).

Re: Slow transfer in an odd situation
How are you doing the transfer? If you are doing it through a normal NFS / CIFS share, drag'n'drop may well be sending the file through your PC /Mac and then back again. So I would point my finger at the network connection, for example, max transfer on a 10 / 100 Mbps line is 11MB/s~, WiFi even less.
Are you sure that you aren't coping the file a la:
NAS Box ----> PC / Mac ----> NAS Box

Re: Slow transfer in an odd situation
Yes, you are correct. I did not mean to imply that it was directly from one share to another (I am not "tech-smart" enough to do that). It is a drag and drop (via my iMac).
