Streaming from ReadyNAS duo to Xbox 360
As the title states, I want to stream from my ReadyNAS duo to my Xbox 360. I'm talking mainly movies.
Can anyone help me with this? I've googled with no luck, but if someone knows about a thread concerning the issue, please post the link here.
- Thanks

- JBDragonAspirantI just got my ReadyNAS Yesterday, my first of 2 3TB drives should be waiting for me when I get home today. But the Simple Answer is movie on the NAS, the Xbox 360 should be able to see the ReadyNAS because of DLNA. Basiclaly the same as when you can stream Movies from your Windows PC. My Windows PC is always on because I'm using it for Media Center and my 3 Xbox 360's, one for each of my HDTV's can then play that content back. I have 2 Dual HD Homerun tuners recording HD programs with my large Antenna. Being a Cable cutter and all. All I pay for these days is Internet, going from $170 a month to $35 a month.
Anyway I use PLEX. Gives a Great Interface for Movies, TV and Music. I'll use it with my ReadyNAS. I could run it on my ReadyNAS but it wouldn't be able to transcode, which is a problem when I want to watch on my iPad or iphone for example. So since my PC already is always on I use run PLEX on that also. All my movies and TV and Music will be on the ReadyNAS. I've been using a 2TB Seagate External USB HDD. I had is plugged into my Router which has a couple USB ports, also able to do DLNA and the Xbox or my PS3 could read directly from it that way. I like PLEX far better, and so I watch my Movies from one of my ROKU Boxes which has a PLEX App for it. ROKU uses far, far less power then a Xbox 360. A ROKU is around 6-9 Watts, a Xbox 360 is 280+ watts. I use MakeMKV to rip my DVD's, HD DVD's and a few Blu-Rays so far. Then I use Handbreak to get the size way down. I can get a 6 Gig Movie Rip from MakeMKV down to just over 1 Gig for example!!! Still looks great on my 50" plasma's. The Blu-Ray's and HD DVD, the results arn't as Good, but it depends. Say 16 Gig's down to 10 Gig's. Still looks great. it's nice that the movie just starts right up. No Preview garbage, and Copyright Warnings and all that other garbage to wait though. No hunting around for a DVD. It's all in a Nice looking Plex Interface to access at anytime in any room. I'm doing my DVD's and HD DVD's. I don't have one of my HD DVD players hooked up since I've moved into my house. I do have a DVD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray drive in my PC I installed a few years ago!
I'll assume you need DLNA turned ON for the ReadyNAS if you have it off! The Xbox should then find it in the Video section, Find that drive, Click on the Directory to file of what you have installed. I'll know more when I get home in a few hours how it is exactly. I do know my Xbox 360 wouldn't play my MKV movies, the PS3 does! MKV is really just a container for MP4. It's a far better compression format then MP2 which DVD's use, which is why I get such good compression results with DVD's!!! I rip with Multi Audio tracks, Normally a Stereo and a 5.1 track. That way in the Bedroom I play Stereo and in the Family Room I do 5.1 Surround. Again it's Automatic using PLEX and my ROKU. It picks the correct one I have setup for Default, but easy to select whatever one I want. On the PS3, more of a Hassle to switch Audio tracks. I also encode the Subtitles. For some reason I can't see them in PLEX, but I can see them on my computer, On/off. That way I can be in the bedroom with the volume down or off and at least read what's going on. MKV allows this flexibility.
