Hmm I could not find a Y USB3.0 cable, could this be resoolved using a powered usb 3.0 hub ?

Yes. Though sometimes hubs get the NAS confused.

I tried with a powered hub, its even worse: connecting while the nas is already up either crashes it (no reply to ping not web administration page not even being able to power it down by pressing the button I had to unplug the mains...) same thing when trying to power up the nas with the usb hdd already wired to the usb3.0 hub... Very disappointing, this is a elements 2a52 WD external drive...
Ill try the Y cable later on and report here anyway.

OK so it works but I have to use the Y cable: the power end to the USB hub and the data end to the NAS directly; that is the only way I could get it to work reliably. This is really weird.
It really looks like the NAS power is on the weak side...
But hey it works...
