Very slow Rsync back up to USB HDD

Question

Hi guys,

My back ups are taking for ever...

It is a rsync backup via front usb port, about 2 - 5 GB new data, a little changed data. USB is FAT32 i think or NTSF.

Either way it takes like 24 hours minimum to complete.

So, I checked the log last night:
sent 6650837713 bytes received 218974581 bytes 86551.54 bytes/sec
total size is 148407938494 speedup is 21.60

86551.54 bytes/sec - WHAT???? Am I correct in thinking that this is less than 1 meg a sec?

What could be wrong?

The Duo has a very low powered CPU in it, the calculations needed by apps like rsync will take a long time. That in combination with FAT32/NTFS on a USB drive, you probably wont see much faster.

Yes, I have read that guide on Rsync. That is how I set it up in the first place.

Are you saying that I cannot expect speeds any faster then what I have? Less than 1 meg a sec? REALLY??? that seems ridiculous.

Can you recommend a quicker method?

Maybe just use my sync software on my PC (AllwaySync) to sync from the NAS to the usb whilst connected? would that be faster?

I use rsync to backup my pro to the v1 the jobs run on the v1 systems). That gets about 5 MB/s over the network. So it is slow. I don't use rsync over USB, though your speeds seem slower than I'd expect.

Backing up over a gigabit network to a PC-connected USB drive would be faster. That just uses the NAS as a file server.
