can't ssh from ReadyNAS Duo to a server ssh with port not 22

Hi,

I need to access from my ReadyNAS (typically from a cron job) to an SSH server installed on a laptop. But the server is not rooted, so it runs with port 2222.

I have been trying to ssh to the server as:
ssh -v -v -v -p 2222 192.168.2.3

But the connection times out and the only output I get is:
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to 192.168.2.3 [192.168.2.3] port 2222.
debug1: connect to address 192.168.2.3 port 2222: Connection timed out

I suspect that this is probably because the port 2222 is blocked on the ReadyNAS. I guess that is the return port that is used per default, but am not sure how SSH works, that is if it allocates another dynamic port or not for the feedback socket.

To verify that I tried to install iptables with:
apt-get install iptables

When I run:
iptables -L -v
, I get:
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.2.11: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

As I understand, this is because the iptables package does not include the kernel module ip_tables, and I couldn't find which package did include the iptables/netfilter kernel module.

I looked on this forum and on internet how to install iptables on my ReadyNAS but I did not find any information. Though it seems that users have been running iptables on the ReadyNAS Duo, because I could find some posts mentioning it.

It seems I am missing something obvious, but I can't find out what.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID] running RAIDiator 4.1.7 [1.00a043] .
I looked on the forum what was new in the releases 4.1.8 to 4.1.10, the latest, but did not find any new kernel, so I assume that it is not introduced by the new RAIDiator releases.
I try to avoid to upgrade the system because I have tweaked quite a bit my system and any upgrade might break the current state.

Would appreciate any help.
Thanks

  • The NAS would not firewall any ports. Looks like SSH is not running on whatever that 192.168.2.3:2222 box is. Check that IP's server.
  • But I can log into the SSH server from another computer on the same WiFi LAN network. The other computer is a windows laptop with Putty.
Strangely, I have another windows laptop with another version of Putty which cannot log into the server, but this second windows laptop is my work computer and I have noticed that the firewall on this laptop can block some ports. That is why I thought that the ReadyNAS Duo had some similar problem.

Do you have any idea how to proceed next?

    Thanks again
  • By the way, I forgot to mention that ping 192.168.2.3 is working, even from the ReadyNAS Duo
