eda500 options (is this thing problematic?)
Hey guys I'm at my wits end with the eda500. If you look at this thing the wrong way it starts resyncing.
I just got 2 new 8TB reds for my main RN312. In my eda500 I have four 4TB greens and a 5TB seagate. ReadyNAS does not like the Seagates, that much I know, I just went through 3 of them. In a fresh system wipe, new format, The eda500 finished syncing. I started copying my 8TB of data to it, 2 hours in and an unexpected network error occurs. The readynas won't log me in (frozen), I unplug, it comes back - resyncing.
SOME IDEAS - maybe you experts can point me in the right direction.
option 1: Get new drives for the eda500.
If I get a total of four 8TB reds, I can put them all in the eda500 (raid5). I won't need to utilize the rn312, but since it needs to have disks installed, I'll just put some spare empty drives in it essentially making the eda500 a main 5-bay NAS.
IF the problems I am mentioning with the eda500 are typical and new nas drives won't improve - I would appreciate the input because dropping $850 on new drives is going to hurt.
I guess my other option is to forget the eda and just go back to my windows machine as my faux server.
I'm lost here.

My RN204, RN316 and EDA500 have Seagate ST4000DM000 disks, and they've been running fine for years. No problems with Seagate disks, and they have never needed to resync. Just make sure that you get a NAS rated disk.
The WD green drives are (historically) bad for RAID devices because they like to spin down by themselves, and are sometimes slow to spin back up. Another problem is that the green drives do not have tolerance to rotational vibration, which is bad when you have a stack of drives in the same chassis. It causes them to wear out prematurely.
NETGEAR Support can and will deny support on devices using drives not found on the official compatibility list.

- Thanks for the advice. I have used wdidle on the greens to max the headparking delay. That was back when i was using freenas.
So u think it will make all the difference, getting the nas type hdds?
Aren't those drives ur using desktop drives? That list doesn't list my new wd 80efax drives.- LaserbaitLuminary
Yep, the ST4000DM000 is labled as a desktop drive, but it's tolerant to rotational vibration, and doesn't have any of the funky spindown power tricks. Seagate also approves it for server and DAS use.
I think it'll make all the difference in the world. I've heard nothing but bad things about the green drives in a NAS.
- Well, glad to hear im not the only one with scrub problems. I got 3 wd reds and im going to put them in the eda500. I have either (approved) 2 seagate 1tb desktop drives or 2 ssd drives to put in the rn 312, just as dummy drives. No plans on utilizing them. We'll see how it goes.
Do you think i would notice any difference in using a pair of ssds in the 316?- StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I don't see how SSDs in the main chassis would improve scrub times in the EDA500 volume(s).
- Ok. How about overal responsiveness or anything else that would benefit from having ssds?
Thanks Stephen
