Duo v2 - Can't add second disc
Hi guys.
Can someone help? I'm trying to add a second disc to my x-raid volume. This is the second time I've tried. The first was with my original in slot 1. That failed, so I tried turning the NAS off and moving my original disk to slot 2 and putting the new disk in slot 1.
The existing volume is:
WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 1863 GB (25 °C, Write-cache On). Status: OK
The new disk is a WD20EARX-00PASB0.
My NAS is a ReadyNAS Duo v2. Firmware RAIDiator 5.3.5. RAID type X-RAID2.
Once I have added the new disk, I get this within the logs:
Tue Jun 5 11:35:51 GMT 2012
New disk detected. If multiple disks have been added, they will be processed one at a time. Please do not remove any added disk(s) during this time. [Disk 1]
Tue Jun 5 11:35:59 GMT 2012
Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 1.
Tue Jun 5 11:36:17 GMT 2012
Disk removal detected. [Disk 1]
Tue Jun 5 11:36:17 GMT 2012
A disk was removed from the ReadyNAS. One or more RAID volumes are currently unprotected, and an additional disk failure or removal may result in data loss. Please add a replacement disk as soon as possible.
It seems to go fine until it says "Disk removal detected". I haven't removed the drive.. When watching the process in RAIDAR, it recognises the disk and then says the disk is DEAD before then saying the disk is not present. Wierd.
Can anyone help?

- HERBIEOAspirantwell the slots on the duo must be ok because you have tried both and your first disk works fine in those slots, i would try connecting the new drive to your computer to see if it works it may be faulty.

If the kernel can't get at the disk, sgdisk won't find it either, sgdisk uses the Linux drivers in order to access the hard drive.
This is not likely to be a software problem, could you try another new disk?[2012/06/05 11:36:01 2329] dump pt list to /dev/sdb root: 0

Sorry to drag up an old thread. I never solved this, so I'm coming back for another try!
Re: the disk, I have checked it out with WD's utilitys on my desktop machine. The drive comes back 100% OK...
Can anyone help? I tried again today...

RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array.

System is up. - ReadySECUREApprenticeMigroo,
If you PM me and send me the logs, I can take a look at it for you to see if anything has changed. We may have to put your device in tech support mode and I'll see what I can do with your drive. - MigrooAspirantHi readysecure1985
Appreciate you taking a look at this. I have emailed the logs.
Thanks

Where did you e-mail them to? - evan2NETGEAR Expertsmartctl can not open the disk, could you use WD tool (Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics - DLGDIAG for Windows
) in Whindows to write zeros? then do quick test using the tool, if it is OK, hot insert to Duo v2.
You had better not use WD Green disk do RAID, because WD officially doesn't support RAID user cases in more than 2-bay device for WD Green disk.***** Disk SMART log for channel 2 [sdb] *****

Smartctl open device: /dev/sdb failed: No such device or address - MigrooAspirantHi evan,
Thanks again for looking at this.
I can confirm that I used WD tool Data LifeGuard Diagnostic to write zeros and then check the disk. Everything was 100%.
I can email you a copy of the tool report if you like, but summary is as follows:
Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WMAZA8698712
Firmware Number: 51.0AB51
Capacity: 2000.40 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 22:30:01, November 11, 2012
Please clarify your last sentence? I have a 2-bay device (ReadyNas Duo v2) - can I not do XRAID with these hard drives?
