Smart Switch
60 TopicsTrunk Port for 802.1X
We have about 120 Netgear GS110TPv3 switches in use for connecting end user equipment. The switches are great because they support 802.1X, allowing us to dynamically assign VLANs to ports. The Disadvantage is that we also need GVRP because there is no way to set the uplink port as "General trunk port" or "Uplink port" (or is there a way I do not know?). It would be great if I can set a port to "Uplink" or "Trunk Port" and the switch is adding this port tagged to all known and learned VLANs (like VLANs learned via 802.1X) automatically.754Views0likes1CommentTemperature monitoring and control on Smart/Plus switches
I own an XS724EM 24-port 10G switch. It runs warm to the touch, and the default fan profile seems to err on the side of low noise rather than cooling. Tech support says that the switch is designed to spin down fans entirely unless a certain temperature threshold is reached. Personally, I would prefer to see more aggressive cooling, even if meant slightly more fan noise. So my feature request is twofold: Basic temperature monitoring (ambient, internal) in the admin GUI. All I want is a simple readout of how warm the switch currently thinks it is. Basic manual fan control in the admin GUI. I'm envisioning something like the "Cool/Balanced/Quiet" drop-down menu (see image) found on ReadyNAS units. I know the managed switches have functionality along these lines. To me, this basic temperature monitoring and control seems like it should definitely be included on Smart/Plus switches too.2.5KViews5likes2Commentsimprove WebUI GS724Tv4: Time Configuration (SNTP)
Summer Time Configuration improve the description of the fields to be "Offset Minutes" instead of just "Offset" because this is misleading as one assumes "Hours" (as it is in "Time Configuration") also slightly better "Time Zone Name" instead of just "Zone" (as it is in "Time Configuration")1.5KViews1like1Commentmail-server without username+password
acutally i cant send logging over email using a mail-server without username and password. in many environments there is an smtp in management lan without authentification. this should be enabled as its an easy change for devs. also i dont get an useful error message after loggin email test fails. thats very bad. also all logging is very rare and bad995Views0likes2Commentsnetgear community bugs
for about a year netgear did not fix community bugs: a) i cant select label Managed Switch so i always have to select Smart Switch. b) i dont want to enter product name everytime as i always suggest for one product only most times. so i prefer a default or dropdown list of reg. products or main lines. c) if i get an error from invalid label i get a flood protection warning if i retry. this is too strict and should not apply on errors which are no flood.762Views0likes1Commentsearch option for web gui
web gui is very confusing and if you dont know netgear much you dont find settings like dns etc quickly. so add a search option (javascript, browserside) which allows to quickly search in an index the setting page.. so searching for "dns" will show me the page where i can set dns settings. also add option to quickly open context in cli on each page, so i can click a button which shows this context part in cli, which can be edited in browser like notepad or sth else. or a small cli popup.613Views0likes0Commentsupgrade switch firmware without stopping switching..
as we all dislike downtimes we need a simple restart if updating to a new firmware. a) just switchover during run if change is quite simple and restart some services b) restart but keep on switching but just do some basic things like vlan etc if this is possible by hardware. means a kind of fallback switching if cpu is restarting, many tasks shouldnt need cpu. c) add an option to restart switch without letting ports go down so server wont notice downtime. so they will just timeout i know these ideas are not really useful, but maybe an inspiration in optimizing the update downtime. also a faster reboot could be nice without all h/w inis. also reboot should be timed on special countdown in minutes or on special time/date setable over html GUI. so it can be planned. also if boot fails it should recover to old fw, for doing so it should force user to login to web gui and say ok worked otherwise it would reboot to old fw682Views0likes0Commentswrite memory and more hp syntax
most professionals use hp syntax (okay someone use cisco too 😉 so write memory should write the running config to memory.. many syntax are very confusing. so in context mail-server i cant just quickly show settings with show so i have to type whole show command... not very nice.. maybe there should be an option to change syntax or add permanent aliases etc513Views0likes0Comments
