95% drop in download speed after router upgrade

After upgrading the firmware to version 2.5.1.16 I encountered a massive drop in download speed. My internet connection is 1,000 Mbit, I typically get between 300 and 800 Mbit (Up and down) through it.

After the upgrade, I'm around 10 to 15Mbit download through the WiFi but 750Mbit upload remains as before.

I first thought it's related to either the WiFi or my ISP. However, when I use a laptop and plug it in directly to the ISP's modem, upload and download are just fine. So that is probably not the issue.

I ended up re-setting the router system and setting it up from scratch but this didn't help either.

I used the "Speedtest" option in the router GUI to test the speed. Download was 20Mbit, Upload was 980 Mbit.

That leads me to believe that it's not a WiFi issue but related to the connection between Router and modem. I first thought it's the cable, however I used the same cable when I checked the speed between modem and computer.

Anyone of you has experienced something similar? And is there an option to download the firmware?

  • What are the wired speed test results?

What is the mfr and model# of the ISP modem?

Orbi and v16 is well capable of doing 900Mpbs on wired connections. Mine does.

    • I still need to test wired speed to the router. I only got one network cable, other one is broken.

ISP Modem is Huawei Echolife HG8040H5

This modem has a built in router. Have to routers on the same line can cause problems. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Try wired speed tests first. If you don't get good speed with wired, I would try the Orbi in one of the following configurations:

        1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
        2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
        3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Wireless speeds, depending upon design and support, most AC wifi devices will max out at around 400-500mpbs on speed tests. My iphone 6sP gets around 500Mpbs thru the RBR50 with v16 loaded. It get 900Mpbs or just over with a wired PC. However I don't have a gateway modem, a cable modem only.

I often ask, "what changed?"  In this case, Orbi firmware changed. Although tedious, it is not terribly difficult to download the previous firmware from Netgear's support site and manually "update" (ha, "downdate") to the previous version.

    https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBR50.aspx#download

Click on the "plus sign" and it will show every previous firmware version.

I would do the satellites first by connecting directly to the satellite web page (http://<IP address of satellite>) and then finish with the router.
