Netgear Orbi (RBK53) AC3000 with multiple unmanaged switches
I am looking at purchasing the RBK53 system from Costco, but have a question about the installation. I see on the support page it shows you can go from the cable modem, into the router, then into an unmanaged switch and then into the two satellites. Mine is a bit more complex, and after purchasing a compeitors system (made by a search engine company) none of the satellites would consistently show up as being wired, only as mesh and my speeds dropped by 70%! I live on an acre and I supply internet to my house, an unattached granny unit and my shop.
My system would go from my Arris cable modem (Spectrum/Charter) into the Orbi router in my garage. From that router into a trendnet unmanaged switch. From that switch, it goes to several locations. One would go directly from the granny unit, into one of the Orbi satellites and that into a switch for that house. I don't see that being an issue since from the initial unmanaged switch it woul dbe going directly into one of the satellites. This also applies to my shop. It would also go from my initial unmanaged switch to directly to another satellite in the shop. The one I am not sure of, is my media cabinet......That would go from the initial unmamanged switch in the garage, to a 12-port Cat5e patch panel, to a netgear switch, and then I would put a patch cable into the last satellite.
With the unamed search engine product, that last satellite with them does not show up as hardwired, but as "mesh." Does anyone know how the Orbi would treat this? Going through multiple switches will it still be able to showup hardwired for the backhaul? Sorry for the long winded question, just trying to accurately explain my setup.

What is the Mfr and model# of the IP modem the Orbi is connected too?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ethernet switch if one is in the configuration.
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials. Thoght using wired back haul should not effect range and should increase it. I have not used or tested a Trendnet switch, however I have several HP, D-Link and a NetGear switches in the mix and have had zero issues going from a main switch or now using a smaller switch behind the router that carries DISH Hopper and Joeys, PC and microcell with the 1 satellite at the far end of my home.Just besure the lan cabling is good and the switches are unmanaged. You can use managed switches if you disable ALL IGMP protocols from what others have said.

Hi andersen24,
Let me see if I have this connection map straight:
Arris Cable Modem
|
Orbi Router
|
Initial Unmanaged Switch
|
|=>-----Granny Unit-----Orbi Satellite 1-----switch (unmanaged?, shouldn't matter as it is after satellite)
|=>-----Shop-----Orbi Satellite 2
|=>-----12-port Cat5e patch panesl-----Netgear switch (managed or unmanaged?)-----Orbi Satellite 3
The only issue I see with connecting Orbi Satellite 3 will be whether the "Netgear switch" is managed or not. For technical reasons I do not fully understand, managed switches are not supported for setting up a wired backhaul, at least with the Orbi system. If that "Netgear switch" is unmanaged, then I don't think you will have a problem. I have multiple unmanaged swtiches in my setup and I have no issues with establishing a wired backhaul with my Orbis.
So it comes down to that last switch. If it is unmanaged, you should be good. Good luck!
