Orbi RBR 50 & RBS 50 - i can't get my Google Nest Mini's to connect?

I have tried turning off the 5ghz in the advanced settings as suggested by FURRYe38 in another post but this hasn't made a different, infact i could still see that some devices had a 'connection type' as 5ghz.  Any other ideas welcomes before my kids go insane?

  • What Firmware is currently loaded?

Be sure that after you disable the 5G SSID broadcast, that you disable the wifi radio on your setup mobile phone or pad, forget the wifi profile on these devices, then reconnect them to the Orbi SSID. They should be connected to the 2.4Ghz radio then at this point. Thought the 5G SSID isn't being broadcast, the signal still is and any previously connected devices will still be connected to the 5Ghz radio. They just have to be told to forget and setup again after the 5G SSID is turned OFF.

Also be sure that you use the prior SSID name and PW on the Orbi router, from your previously used wifi router as well. Helps when migrating to Orbi with devices that had been connected to the old wifi router.

Thanks FURRYe38, how do i do the above that you suggest?

  • do you have an old router?

when orbi first came out, there was some issues that have mostly been resolved. but what I did was setup an old router with the same ssid/password as the orbi. Then once I had the device setup (and updated), I'd power the old router off and the orbi back on.

You could also do this with a phone acting as a hotspot if needed.

For the most part, this hasn't been needed for a couple years in my experience. I'd make sure your orbi device is updated. Problem is if the google device isn't updated or you're trying to set it up while your device is on a different band.

Make sure they device you're setting up is on the same wifi radio (2.4ghz v 5ghz) you're setting the google home device on.

Everything is new, the Orbi router and Satalitte was set up 2 wks ago and i've managed to connect everything except the new Google nest mini's which we had set up on our old Plusnet router for approximately 1 week.  All software will be uptodate as everything is new.

Just because its new doesn't mean it shipped with the newest firmware. What version is on your orbi?

I've got an orbi setup and was able to add both my google home and google mini without issues or needing to to anything fancy.

        What modem are you using?

Nest Mini fully supports 2.4G and 5G WiFi, as reported in this spec:

    "Wireless Connectivity 802.11b/g/n/ac (2.4 GHz/5 GHz) Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Chromecast"

If these Mini's were previously connected to a different router ("Plusnet"), perhaps the easiest solution is to "reset" the Nest Mini's and set them up from scratch. https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/20623727?hl=en
