RBR 50 - 3 years perfect now my desktop is VERY slow online

Firmware is v2.7.3.22 on Orbi. Orbi network name: Desktop is a Dell with up to date OS.

RBR 50 and satellite have connected without fail for 3 years.  I have Spectrum internet service regularly around 200 mbps. The spectrum modem provides only wireless service and is located near my desktop.  The Orbi is in the living room, 30 feet away. The satellite is upstairs.  We have good connectivity all over the house.

Within the last 3 days my desktop has started becoming so sluggish online that I have frequently timed out and been unable to proceed.

We did speed tests with all our personal devices. It varied from 36 mbps to 200 mbps.  I am not fluent in modem problem solving. I called Spectrum and we reset the modem twice.

I wasnt able to login to the Orbi app and had to reset my password. Then I reset the Orbi and synced the satellite. All of our handheld devices regained their normal speeds of 200 mbps.

But not my desktop. I had online Dell service. They ran tests, and then pulled up the Orbi.  Dell said I had to have 2 named networks because I have both 2.4 and 5 connection types.

I just spent over an hour online with a Netgear technician.  He says that my computer is using the 2.4 connection and he can't force a change. He said I had to buy an Orbi Extender EX8000 to fix it. (I also noticed in the list of connected apps it doesn't list everything that is connected.)

I think he might be wrong. The modem is sitting 2 feet from me and this desktop. There's only two of us using our network. The modem is right here and the Orbis are spaced correctly. We normally have great service everywhere. I see that even our Roku is on the 2.4 connection and we stream all the time with no problem.

Can anyone give me any advice?

Thank you!

  • I see the adapter is only connecting at 200Mpbs.

    Specs say it should connnect:

    Peak Speed: 433 Mbps

    Standards: 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11a/b/g, 802.11n

    Wi-Fi Spectral Bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz

    Channel Utilization: 20/40/80 MHz

MIMO Configuration: 1x1 (1-stream) <Not great for connection rates and speeds.

    Wi-Fi Features: MU-MIMO

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

If the one PC is the only one having problems while others are not, it maybe the PC or the wifi adapter with in the PC that needs to be looked at.

You might contact Dell and ask for help and support information regarding there product and this wifi adapter.

Ensure the adapter drivers are up to date for the PCs networking adatpers.

Have them check to see in the advanced settings of the adapter to see if there maybe a setting to force the adapter to only connect to 5Ghz. Sometimes adapters may have this option.

Check the ethernet cable speeds at this PC as well to see if speeds are to spec

  • Any progress on this?

  • FURRYe38 Thanks for asking me if I had any updates on my problem. I had to stop trying to fix things while I completed a work problem.

I'm back today to work on this problem. I did some more research on this and found that I had talked to you online about this identical problem 2 years ago. At that time a Spectrum supervisor from out of town had come to my home and corrected the problem. I honestly don't know what he did but the problem had not re-occurred until two weeks ago.

Here's the details in summary. All mobile devices work at or above 200 mpgs on this network. OS on my desktop is up-to-date, as is the firmware on my Orbi/satellite v2.7.3.22. I pay for Dell Premium service so I went online with a tech who checked cards/plugs/firmware. Everything is up-to-date and running correctly.

The Spectrum modem is only wireless with ethernet cable coming into it. No computers are connected to it with a network cord. It says: E31N2V1, Hitron Technologies, Inc, DOCSIS 2.1 eMTA, Input 12V= 1.5 A

I went online with Orbi support and he told me he couldn't fix it and that I needed to buy an Orbi extender. And that sounds wrong since the Spectrum wireless modem is 3 feet from my desktop and the Orbi is less than 30 feet away. And it hasn't had a problem in 2 years. I am not "fluent" in problem solving this.

I have done screenshots of all the settings in the Orbi online controls and am attaching. I don't know how to see what the Specctrum modem settings are. The last screenshot is the Log DOS. I don't remember ever looking at it before and I have never cleared it. The dates are from 8/26/21 til today. I see many DOS. I run Malwarebytes premium that has web, malware, ransomware and exploit protection on my computer and have no problems. So, are they all being blocked?

Would be nice to know what they did to correct that. If nothing else has changed since then, sans the FW update, I presume the system should be working ok.

That ISP modem isn't the greatest. Might ask the ISP if there maybe a better modem they can let you use.

You might uncheck some of the logs captures, like VPN and access to allowed sites. Uncheck items you don't really need. Helps limit the logs and the router having to track all that.

Has a full power OFF of the RBR and ISP modem for 1 minute then back ON been performed?

Last resort maybe a reset on the Orbi system...

Although I had already done this, this morning I did it again-

I shutdown my desktop, the ISP modem, the Orbi and its satellite. The only signal in the house was ATT.

(FYI, in case this is useful information- the ISP modem is connected via both a coaxial cable and a blue ethernet cable coming from the wall. The Orbi has two blue ethernet cables connected in the back. One in the port labeled ethernet and one in the port labeled internet. I haven't changed any wiring on the modem or the Orbi.)

After everything had been shut down for at least 15 minutes, I brought up the ISP modem. No wireless on anything. I turned on the Orbi. 200+ mbps on 2 ipads and 2 iphones. My desktop which is within 3 feet of the ISP modem and less than 30 feet from the Orbi was getting 49 mbps. No signal upstairs until I booted the satellite. Then there was 200+ mbps on any device taken upstairs.

I've (again) run Dell diagnostics. No problems anywhere. I can't think of any logical reason to go back to factory defaults on the Orbi, but will if you can think of any.

I am going to do Dell support online one more time before I try to argue with Spectrum abt the modem. Do you have anymore thoughts? I appreciate anything.
