Slow WiFi - Orbi RBR20

Good Evening,

I recently purchased an Orbi AC2200 from Costco.  Model number is RBR20.  The router itself gets around 350 mbps (on a 400 mbps connection), but nothing else gets over 15 mbps.  I can stand next to the router on my phone and sometimes see speeds upto 30. My PC is in direct line with the router, and at a distance of 22 feet.  However, the max speed I am getting is 10 mbps, and an upload speed of 20 mbps.  This is quite confusing as my max upload speed is 25 mbps.  I have the firmware up to date, and I have followed numerous troubleshooting threads.  At this point I am returning the system unless you all have another answer.

  • What wireless devices do you have connected?

Are they connected to the 5Ghz portion of the Orbi?

    How are you speed testing?

Do wired LAN cable connections see better results?

  • I only have this speed issue with my phone. I can have over 400mbps on my iPad while having only 30 on my LG phone. It is not a new phone (2 years old) and it  recently started to have a lot other issues, therefore I think the problem is rather with the wifi receiver in my phone than with the Orbi. All the other equipments work seamless with the Orbi, even the Satellit works perfectly on the lower level in our house.

I have Xfinity 1G cable subscription with Comcast.

  • Maybe a issue with the phone.

Besure your wired LAN cable speeds are good. If this and other wifi devices work well. Possible issue with this particular phone.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many

Try disabling the following and see:
MIMO, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

How do you change those settings? I can't seem to do much in the app.

Need to make those changes with a PC and log into the routers web page...

  • In May 2018 I bought a Orbi RBR20 and one satellite.  All has gone well, until now.  My modem wired to the desktop get over 200 mps, but wireless via the Orbi I'm getting 13mps.  All other devies are slow via the Orbi.  Netgear support is horrible.  Any suggestions?

      What FW is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too? Built in router here by chance?

      Couple of options,
      1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
      2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
      3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Is the Orbi system operating in Router or AP mode?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?
What WPA security modes are you using? Try WPA2 and AES only.

Try disabling the following and see:
IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Be sure the BeamForming and MIMO are enabled.
