Unbrick an RBR40

Hi, hoping someone might be able to help me unbrick an unresponsive Orbi RBR40. It just decided to up and die on me, the second one to do so (the only reason I got another one was I found one very cheap on ebay and I have three satellites, replacing the whole setup with something more reliable is unaffordable for me). Since I can't replace it, and the lack of a mesh system is causing family strife, I thought I'd have a go at unbricking it.

I bought a CP2104 USB serial adapter and pieced together info from a variety of sources. Eventually I was able to get a response via the serial connection in PuTTY, during a 30-30-30 reboot it displayed the following:

I haven't been able to find any info on boot error code 3039 to see if it looks like a fixable situation, or whether this device is just totally hosed. (I have not been able to interrupt the boot sequence by pressing keys as when this info comes up, it is over in a flash and I can't press any keys fast enough!)

Any advice gratefully received, I am at the end of my tether with this damn thing 😒

  • Ha, not quite - I binned the original one and replaced it with another off ebay. Lasted two years before the second one also died, figured I'd try again and the serial adapter was so cheap it was worth a shot.

It does indeed look as though that error is fairly terminal - I found nothing Orbi specific, but as you say there was something on the OpenWRT forums which indicates the RBR40 isn't even getting as far as U-boot completion, and so manually updating the firmware isn't going to be an option. Time to bin this device as well...

The sad thing is, although I swore I'd never get another, it's infinitely cheaper to pick up another RBR than it is to upgrade, and if I get another 2 years out of the next one... I must be a glutton for punishment :(

Maybe go with something newer generation, AX or AXE or BE series.

IF the 40 series failing at a particular time frame, I'd move into something newer generation. I still have my 850 series from 2019. Working great.

      Good Luck.

Two years later and your still trying to fix that?

That code would be an internal code for OpenWRT FW. You'd have to ask them on what that means.

If you need another RBR, try looking at places like ebay for shopgoodwill for good used units and easier to get something running if you really want another RBR40 thats now EoL.

Maybe time to upgrade to something new as well.

    Good Luck.
