M3 (MH3150) with USB-C to Ethernet adapter (USB2ETH) does not charge and has no Ethernet connection.

Hello,

I purchased the M3 along with the original Netgear USB-C Ethernet adapter, but unfortunately, this combination doesn't seem to work—even though the adapter is supposed to be compatible with the M3.

I have configured the M3 settings for charging and tethering, and the adapter's green and orange LEDs light up as soon as a LAN cable is connected; however, no data transfer actually takes place. I cannot access the internet or the router itself through this connection. The adapter is supposed to work via plug-and-play, but it doesn't. The M3 appears to be running the latest firmware.

At first, I tried using it without a power supply; later, I connected a USB-C charger to the adapter hoping that would solve the issue, but it didn't work. I also noticed that the router doesn't charge at all when connected via the adapter; it only charges when I plug the charging cable directly into the router, bypassing the adapter.

Is there a trick to this? Is the adapter defective, or is the information on the product page—stating that it is compatible with the M3—incorrect?

Regards,

A random USB-C charger can easily lead to this issue.

Third-party USB cable and power adapter compatibility with NETGEAR mobile hotspots and mobile routers

Was already tempted to suggest trying the original Netgear supplied power adapter - to find there is none in the standard delivery 8-(

JohnPeng do you have some advice what else can break the charging over the USB adapter?

Tethering is - to my knowledge on all Netgear Mobile routers - available on the USB port only.

Even when connecting the the official USB2ETH adapter, it does not become magically a LAN tethering device. - even less, there is no "automatic" remote NDIS (RNDIS) device available.

You can either go into the MR3150 settings and put it in passthrough mode (making it behave like a direct connected "modem"), or you could leave the MR3150 as router (with wifi off) and connect your other computer(s) like you would on any NATing Ethernet router.

What exactly do you expect on the Ethernet (LAN) port?

  • Hi everyone,

I think I’ve found the solution to both problems.

The router can only be charged via the adapter if a PD-compatible charger is used.

A standard 5V USB charger works when connected directly to the router, but not when using the adapter.

The Ethernet issue was resolved via a menu setting. Although the setting's exact function and meaning aren't clear to me—likely due to a potentially incorrect translation—I figured it out through trial and error:

    Settings > General > Internet

and uncheck the box for "Ethernet adapter."

After that, the internet connection via LAN cable worked.

Give the readers a little bit more insight please.

Does the M3 work as a data "modem" for the mobile Internet (and your computer or whatever is connected) does get a public or Carrier Grade NAT address assigned) connected on the LAN port, or

Does the router now work like a common NAT router (able to serve more devices on the LAN), handing out some RFC1918 Private IP addresses by DHCP?
