Nighthawk M1 - Telstra connection issues - Cutting in and out
Nighthawk M1
Hardware version 1.0
PRI Version 03.22
Firmware Version NTG9X50C_10.25.01.01
I have started to notice a drop in the performance of my Nighthawk. I first noticed it when i would either lose or experience really slow internet while watching Netflix. The issue was the same regardless of which ghz band i was using.
I had the modem orginially stored in a cupboard in the middle of the house, it was connected to a wi fi extrender, and a router. We then ran ethernet cables thru the house.
When the modem speed slowed I would run a speedtest and the results where 14up and 4down. Running the same test in the same location using 4g on my iPhone 10 and would get 115up and 45down.
Have been doing alot of testing over a 2 week period and the results are all over the place. Sometimes really high and others really low.
When the speeds slowed I would reset the modem and then would connect to 5ghz and get 135u and 40d, thinking everthing is OK we would lose connection, sometimes in 5 mins other times overnight, I would then have to press the button on the top to turn it back on.
The problem got worst recently when I couldnt connect to my sonos thru the app.
Prior never really had an issue. Actually I was so impressed with it we brought the same system for work.
Getting back to the issue, when the connection woudl either drop out or slow I would change the band via the netgear app on my phone.
Same problem, would cut in and out, I have a Sonos connected to it via wifi and that would work then it wouldn't.
Thinking it may be that I have factory reset the sonos, connected and reconnected numerous times.
Sometimes everything worked for a few hours then stop.
Press the button on the modem, reset sonos, everythign would work again.
Yesterday I brought a sonos boost to bypass the wifi system. I have read online when there are too many devices sometimes the nighthawk plays up.
Last night after setting it up I lost connection to the internet. So the sonos boost hasnt helped.
When i lose connection, i alwsy test speed test on my iphne 10 and get 125u 40d using telstra 4g network, so its not the network.
Today I have contacted my ISP (telstra), they ran a number of ests and couldnt find anything so they have escalated the issue and I am waiting for someone in the higher technical team to contact me. The person didnt know alot about the nighthawk.
The reason I have posted here is I am wondering whether anyone thinks the images i have attached could be the problem.
1) My Modem - connected to aerial - Blue bar is less than 1/2 strength. Rgardless of how many bars I get (I get 4 at home) the blue bar is always 1/2 strength or lower
The work modem isnt connected to the aerial but the blur bar is full strenght
2) My modem - no aerial. Blue bar is where it normally is. That to me doesnt seem right. Today I am only getting 2 bars as I am at work, at home i get 4. Wheather I am at home or at work the blue bar is always under 1/2. The position it is in in the photo is normal.
3) Work modem - connected to aerial. Full blue bar.

Maybe you can try to make M1 as 4G modem only and having another wireless router , I am using Nighthawk R7800, connected to its Ethernet port. Enabling IP Passthrough on M1, so your main routing happened on the router instead of M1 and having better wireless coverage out from the router.

That could be a way around it. Thankyou
I have since noticed a couple of other issues which i will post below which may mean the modem is faulty and connecting a router to it may not be the best solution.

I have had the modem on my desk at work wathcing it, battery only, no ethernet or USB connected. The modem light changes from blue to orange every few hours. The screen shows 0 devices connected, I press the button, the screen refreshes, a few secs later the light changes to blue and shows 1 device connected (my iphone)
The blue signal strength is stil under 10% even thru I have 3 bars

M1 battery is not a stable power source (re-charging is a serious issue), I always pulled out the battery and supply AC power from the adaptor to M1.
