Advice required on what I need to buy
Hi all I've been tasked with distributing broadband across a campus and have a few questions regarding switching... Another department has installed a 1000mb BT broadband bearer within a WAN ...

Hi chrish1984,
I understand the distances now (I got confused before). I did find a solution but we still need to get back to our original problem, qouted below:

If I procure a 1gb distribution switch, how will this connect to the 10gb port on the core switch?
I found the model M4100-12GF, this will be the switch under the core switch (if we can use a 1G port from the core switch). For the 4 other switch, I am suggesting models M4100-26G or M4100-50G. If there is no choice but to use the 10G, I'll see if I can find another solution and get back to you on that.
Thanks,

Here is what I hope to achieve!
Unfortunately there isn't anywhere I can add a switch between WAN room and the LAN rooms.
I'm aware all the data suggests I won't achieve 1gb over OM1 at these distances but in reality is 300m the maximum range? We're told cat5e's max range is 100m but we know 150m cable run will work albeit not at maximum efficiency!
All I really need is for my access switches to be able to connect to the distribution switch, if the efficiency is compromised a little it's not too important because I am only using this network for broadband.
Kind regards
Chris

Thanks JohnRo this is really helpful.
If you could possibly find a 10gb solution I would be grateful. In the meantime I'm going to investigate the feasibility to using a 1gb port on their switch.
Thanks
Chris

Hi JohnRo
It looks like I'm going to be able to get the ISP to configure a 1gb port.
I have checked with one of my suppliers, they can't get hold of the distribution switch you've mentioned but have recomended I use a GSM7328FS V2 M5300-28GF3 instead. What are your thought on this?
How does this solution look to you...?

Hi chrish1984,
A little pricey (for the M5300-28GF3), but that will work as well and a very good alternative(Fully manageable). For the modules and other switches, check if your suppliers carry the items below:
Module(s):
AGM713F - SFP (mini-GBIC) transceiver module - 1000Base-SX - LC multi-mode
Switch(es):
GS728TP - ProSAFE® 24-port 1000base-T Gigabit PoE Smart Switch w/ 4 SFP ports
You should be good to go!
Thanks,
