AutoInstall not working on reset switches

I'm working on setting up an autoconfig environment using M4300/M4350 series switches.  There doesn't appear to be much documentation for this.  The only thing I've been able to find are some notes in the CLI manual in section 6, Utility Commands, and the 13 year old application note How to Configure Auto-install
on Managed Switches.  All documentation indicates that the system should attempt to auto install a configuration if none is found on the switch.  However, I have never been able to get it to attempt to auto-install until I manually change settings on the switch.

The switches I am testing with have either been previously configured, or have only booted and pulled network details from a DHCP server and had a password set, but nothing else.  For the previously configured switch, I have tried to reset it to a default that would be similar to the state of receiving the switch brand new from Netgear:

  • Reset by holding down the reset button for > 15 seconds
  • Run the erase startup-config command
  • Run the clear config command

In all cases, although the switch seems to have a cleared config, it never tries to Auto Install.

The only way I have been able to have the switch successfully auto pull and apply a config is to connect to it, then set boot autoinstall start.  After this, upon reboot, the switch does download the config.

Is there something I'm missing to fully reset the switch to a state that properly emulates a new-from-box switch?  My goal is to have these switches be truly zero-touch config when initially installed or replaced.

Auto Install was never enabled by default on any Netgear switche model, it always is a manual action required e.g. from the console.

Same applies to my knowledge also to the Cisco switches and routers.

  • Darn, I was hoping to find a way to avoid manual interaction with the switch when first setting it up.  It would have made it a lot easier for customers at remote sites.  Do you know of any other ways to make this process as easy as possible?
