There is even more information in the (as of writing) current firmware release notes https://kb.netgear.com/000061325/XS708T-XS712Tv2-XS716T-Firmware-Version-7-0-0-20 - appears that certain firmware versions are required for "any" update, e.g. by using the Web UI - otherwise the utility needs to be used.
