M4350 Firmware Upgrade from v 12.0.17.10, B1.0.0.17 to v 14.0.2.26 Fails

Hello, I just acquired Q4 of the 4300--52-POE+ switches.  I can logon to all of them and all sensors and lights show nominal working condition (everything is Green and no alerts).

The current version of firmware on all of the switches is 12.0.17.10, B1.0.0.17.  When I try to upgrade them to the newest firmware which is 14.0.2.26.  The process works fine and the switch reboots, without any error messages.  But the firmware never updates and remains stuck at 12.0.17.10, B1.0.0.17 and won't updgrade.

I have used the following method per the manual:

  1. Logon to the switch and navigate to  Maintenance--->Upgrade---->HTTP File Upgrade---->Browse and choose the file M4350-v14.0.2.26.stk) to upgrade the firmware to 14.0.2.26
  2. Then I click on Apply on that screen
  3. The firmware downloads and then I get a success message at the bottom of that screen
  4. Then I navigate to Maintenance---->Reset---->Device Reboot--->and Click Apply with the "Save Prior to Reboot' selected and click on Apply on that screen
  5. The switch reboots, redirect me back to the switches logon page and, I logon normally again but the firmware has not updated and remains stuck at 12.0.17.10, B1.0.0.17.

I have also performed the "Reset" process with a paperclip depressing the physical reset button on the switches prior to performing the above upgrade, save prior to reboot, and reboot process, but I get the same result.

So my question are as follows:

  1. Is there a upgrade path that I have to follow to go from v12.0.17.10 to v14.0.2.26?  If yes, please provide those instructions and where do I get firmware that is prior to v14 as the Netgear Support website only have v14 versions listed;
  2. If there is no upgrade path other than what I'm doing above (upgrading directly from v12.0.17.10 to v14.0.2.26), why isn't it working and how do we resolve this issue?

Thank you,

Mike

  • Thanks for the clarification.  Yes, I figured that out that I had the wrong firmware.  But the unfortunately, its because of how Netgear indicates  model numbers.  My M4300 is model number GSM4352PB.  Given the 4352 in the model name, I believed this was a model within the 4350 line.  Obviously it isn't.  No worries.  I upgraded it successfully to 12.0.19.x version of firmware.  Know that I very much appreciate the help, and I would respectfully suggest that Netgear change its approach of model numbers to avoid such confusions (again stated with kindness and good intention).

We can now close this as being resolved.  Again, thank you!!!!

Common misunderstanding these are not simple consumer switches or appliances - so nothing failed on the update. Much more, all Netgear Managed and Smart Managed Switches are holding two software images in two partitions.

Here an example from the Smart Managed Switches admin manual section:

Welcome to the wonderful world of enterprise switches, routers, wireless access points!

Thats all you have to know for learning and understanding your new switches world..

One more point: You can't randomly install firmware images intended for other switch models. The M4350 image certainly can't be run on your M4300-52 model. So wach your step, and select the appropriate model from the Netger Support site.

    https://www.netgear.com/support/product/m4300-52g-poe-plus%20550w%20psu/#download

As of writing, the current firmware is v12.0.19.4 and applicable to a longer list of models.

We can't take away the need for undestanding and learning the world of enterprise networking units. Convinced you will find your way through the great documentation available for your newly acquired switches.

    Enjoy!

Schumaku, thank you for your response.  Yes, I've owned many of Layer 3 Netgear and Cisco switches and configured them.  And, I'm very well aware of image1 and image2.  The upgrade doesn't update either image.  I even went into the configuration to indicate which image should be the upgraded, but neither that image (e.g. image2) or the other image (e.g. image 1) gets upgraded to the new 14.0.2.26 firmware.  After the Upgrade process completes and indicates same, and after the Save Prior to Reboot is applied, after rebooting the switch, the images (both image1 and image2) remain at 12.0.17.10.  Stated differently, neither of the two images upgrades to 14.0.2.26 firmware.

Also, when I perform the upgrade process, I have alternatively chosen the None, Verify, No Verify radio button options  when selecting the firmware image file to make certain that the firmware file is completely and correctly downloaded to the switch before upgrading.  Regardless of that choice (None, Verify, No Verify), and no matter which image (image1 or image2) I pick to be "True" as to which one gets the upgrade firmware and then boots and the current running configuration, the upgrade fails on both image1 and image2.  Both those images on the switch remain as they were, at the same previous firmware level.

So I don't think this issue is related to updated versus running configuration image selection on the switch.

        Mike,

Please re-read my previous resply again.

The M4350 v14.0.2.26 images will never become active on a M4300 model.
