Static IP Setup Question

I am a pastor of a small church tasked with setting of a live streaming system.  I am trying to build something we can grow into and was recommended using a GSM4210p. We want to use the switch to power and connect cameras to a computer and to send audio/video signal to monitors.  I am setting up the equipment at my home to test before connecting to the router at the church building.

In trying to set up the GSM4212P I am stuck at the "Log in and configure the switch" step in the Installation Guide.  I'm using a laptop with Windows 10 Professional.

The first step in the instruction manual says: “1. Configure your computer with a static IP address.”

I missed the first day of class where all this basic stuff was explained.  I Settings/Network & Internet/Ethernet/Unidentified Network  I selected Edit under IP Settings, then Manual, turned on IPv4 and entered the 169.254.100.201 as the IP address, hit save and got the message, “Can’t save IP settings. Check one or more settings and try again.”

I have no idea what to enter for Subnet prefex length, Gateway, Preferred DNS, Alternate DNS.

I have run into that situation where the instructions assume basic knowledge I don’t have.  I find once I get in the door I can generally figure out what to do, but I can’t even get in the door here.

I did connect the switch and the laptop trying both the OOB port and an ethernet port.  I tried launching the browser using the appropriate IP addresses for each, but that didn’t work.

What do I need to do to get to the login window in a browser (the end of step 3 in the instructions)?

Thanks,

Mike

p.s. I spent 4-5 hours looking through the forum and other places for this very basic info and couldn't find it.

  • Hello Mike,

    Welcome to the Netgear Community!

    No worries, that's a little bit a steep learning curve to bring up the first managed switch - you will manage it, look here...

    I think the easiest way would be using an in-band port - without the switch connected to any other parts of the network

    ===

    Configure your computer with a static IP address:
    • For access over an Ethernet network port, use an IP address in the
    169.254.0.0/16 subnet. For example, use 169.254.100.201.

    ===

    The point is that most modern desktop OS will automatically use a ZeroConf address from this 169.254.0.0/12 network (unless there is a DHCP server or it's configured to a static address), so there is typically nothing to configure. Check the adapter IP address at this point - you can direct launch a Web browser and access the switch as shown on this 169.254.100.100 default IP and the QSG.

    In case you insist to do a manual config, use for example this:

    In-band.

    IP Address 169.254.100.201

    Gateway 169.254.100.100

    Subnet mask 255.255.0.0 or 16 bits

    Primary DNS 169.254.100.100

    You can direct launch a Web browser and access the switch as shown on this 169.254.100.100 default IP and the QSG.

    OOB (out-of-band port):

    ===

    For access over the OOB port, use an IP address in the 192.168.0.0/16
    subnet. For example, use 192.168.0.100.

    ===

    IP Address 192.168.0.100

    Gateway 192.168.0.239

    Subnet mask 255.255.0.0 or 16 bits

    Primary DNS 192.168.0.239

    In either case, untick any controls to automatically check the config.

    You can direct launch a Web browser and access the switch as shown on this 192.168.0.239 default IP and the QSG.

    Happy networking!

    -Kurt

      Kurt,

      Thank you!

      I will give this a try this evening.  I will let you know how it goes.

      Kurt,

      I have had no luck so far.  I am missing something here.

      I plugged a Cat6 cable into port 1 on the M4250 and the other end in my laptop.

      When I check Network Status in Settings I see my Wifi Router (which is connected to the internet) and below that Ethernet.  When I select Properties under Ethernet it opens Unidentified Network.

      I tried entering 169.254.100.100 into a browser with this result:

      This site can’t be reached
      169.254.100.100 took too long to respond.

      Try:

      • Checking the connection
      • Checking the proxy and the firewall
      • Running Windows Network Diagnostics

      ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

      Then under Unidentified Network I changed the IP Settings from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual and entered the following.

      IP assignment                         Manual
      IPv4 address:                          169.254.100.201
      IPv4 subnet prefix length        16
      IPv4 gateway                          169.254.100.100
      IPv4 DNS server                                 169.254.100.100

      I hit save, opened a browser, entered 169.254.100.100 and got the same message as above.

      Running Windows Network Diagnostic couldn’t identify the problem.

      I tried the above steps using Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

      I’m not sure where to go from here.

      I am not sure what "untick any controls to automatically check the config" means or where to do it.

        Hi Mike

        Thank you for selecting our M4250 series and extremely sorry about your initial setup issue.

        Let me try two possible ways:

        First, the M4250 support page provides an Installation Guide which explains how to setup your PC/Windows/IPv4 static IP address in your case. When you enter 169.254.100.201 as new static IP address in our Windows TCP/IPv4 settings, maybe enter Tab after typing 169.254.100.201, or enter manually 255.255.0.0 in the next subnet mask field. Then click OK/Apply, you can let all other fields blank, it doesn't matter here.

        Second, we have a video explaining all possibilities for logging to the GUI out of the box, with or without DHCP server. This is M4300, but from this perspective M4250 is exactly the same. We show the static IP setting above, live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUKgRDC6NWQ

        Now, there is no worries at all if you need hands-on help, we are here to help. Please send an email to ProAVDesign@netgear.com and ask if someone can call you back, explaining that you can't access the GUI/IP address of your new M4250 switch from your browser. I am sure that a member of our great US team will contact you asap.

        After that, I'm sure the AV configuration itself wil be much simpler. Here is an overview of what you will be able to do:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuZGkana3sA&t

        Regards,
