Switchport mode configuration vs VLAN mombership configuration
I am using an M4100 for the first time and am a bit confused about the difference between "switchport mode" configuration and "VLAN membership" it seems to me, both are a different way to accomplish...

Your assumption is correct, these are the different ways to configure ports on a switch.
The Switchport Mode simplifies the VLAN configuration. On switches that does not have "VLAN Trunking Configuration" tab, you will have to go to VLAN Membership configure ports for each VLANs and then go to Port PVID Configuration. With "VLAN Trunking Configuration" you can configure these on one tab.
