Turn off Multicasting per port on GS752TPP?
Can you turn off multicasting per port on this switch? If so, how?
Thank you

Not sure the potential readers do undestand what you are asking for here.
A Smart Switch does not (or only in vary small aspects, eg. for UPnP annoucemements, Multicast on it's own.
When it comes to ICMP Multicast, the -receiver- does register for a certain IPv4 and/or IPv6 Multicast address, so only selcted devices will receive eg. the signals from a video stream, and audio stream, ...
This is done to avoid a lot of traffic on a selected connection, (like a wireless, a slower speed Ethernet link, ...) where less bandwith is available where otherwise all the "mess* does flood out to all ports, being as Multicast traffic, or worst case as Brodcast traffic. This is what dumb "unmanged" switches do.
Of course, blunt theory, you could put up ACL flters for a certain Multicast address, and deploy these ACLs on certin ports only.
Said this: When I see on how some products (for example network cameras...) allow randomly generated or manually added Multicast IP addresses (even in the correct address space) can and sometimes must be manually deployed, this does require even more careful planning than a simple IP address and subnet plan (requiring more than verge basic network user knowledge). If not, poor results (errors, problems, ...) are predictable.
Tell us (much, really much much more, in depth, ....) more what (potentially Multicast?) problem you like to address or fix on your network, the community might be able to help. This is more than just an [On] | [Off] switch required in a Web UI.

- shultzee13AspirantIn layman’s terms - i simply need to know if i can disable individual ports on this switch ? I need to be able to disable multicast per port.
Thanks.

Have asked before, or hopefully gave some ideas on your subject multicast question.

Hello shultzee13,
And welcome to the NETGEAR Community! 🙂
For your inquiry, it will depend on what version of switch is your GS752TPP. If its a newer version you maybe able to disable multicast per port. You will see the option under Switching>>Multicast>>IGMP Snooping>>IGMP Snooping interface configuration. From disabling this, the port will not send IGMP requests to the network. For older versions, you cannot disable Multicast per port but per general or as a whole by disabling IGMP snooping.

Appears we have lot of misunderstandings here.
Multicast is a technology designed to save bandwidth. It will be in typically used to transmit data packets from one host to multiple hosts.
To allow routers and switches to distribute multicasts over one or multiple port(s), they use a protocol called Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP). Hosts send one IGMP join message to get a multicast stream. When a switch or router receives an IGMPJoin message on one of its interfaces, it knows that there are hosts on it are interested in joining a multicast stream and sends them to it.
In early Switches, forwarded multicast traffic to all ports, even if only one host must receive this. IGMP snooping is designed to multicast traffic to the requesting host(s).
When IGMP snooping is enabled, the switch detects the IGMP messages sent between the IPv4 router and the multicast hosts connected to the interfaces be exchanged. A table is then maintained that routes IPv4 multicast traffic to the ports that need to receive it.
Said this: Disabling IGMP Snooping on port does -not- disable and block Multicast.

-Kurt.
