GS308E firmware update 1.00.08EN failed: workaround found!
Putting this up to encourage stress reduction for others.
Spent a frustrating hour trying to update to the latest firmware on a GS308E in the home lab. Kept hanging when trying to load. So I went looking for help here and found this, https://bit.ly/3eQjseN . Yes, I was using a Linux workstation with Google Chrome because, well, at work that's what I've used to maintain 1000s of servers and network devices for over 20 years. Anyway, workaround was to fire up a Windows 10 virtual machine and perform the same steps in Google Chrome there. Voila!
Note I haven't had this problem on either the GS308T or some GS305Es in the same environment, so I'm thinking it's a bug in the GS308E firmware (hopefully solved by this update?).
Netgear hardware has never failed me. It's reliable and reasonably priced. The software that rides on top of it? Not so much (although I really love this new WAC505 affixed to the ceiling over me right now -- the web gui for that is really well designed).
It's hard to believe that industry standard browsers like Chrome or Firefox behave that different on Linux vs. Windows - but they do...even on correct html and javascript coding.
There are some flaws on the old old Netgear switch Web UIs where especially Linux users are hurt. Even worse, the extended or long time stable Firefox are flawed by bugs/incompatibilities with these (and many more) embedded Web manageable devices.
Face it: The by far biggest customer base does run Windows and MacOS on the desktops and notebooks - most testing is done on these platforms.
