GS748TR save config locally - only TFTP?

I have an old GS748TR, hardware version 0x3, boot version 1.2.0, and software version 4.0.2.2 that has been running solid for over 10 years. It has now decided (like me) to reboot a couple of times per day.

To make troubleshooting easier, I decided I wanted to do it offline and was going to swap it out with another one still in the box all these years (thank you Newegg for buy 1, get 1). In prep for that, I went looking to get a copy of the current configuration to download to the new switch.

According to the GS748T documentation, there should be both a TFTP and HTTP option as shown in the pdf and below, but my screen only shows the TFTP option. The GS748T documentation is what is linked from the TR page.

Is the TR specifically excluded from HTTP Upload?

From Netgear product documentation:

From device:

tl;dr How do I get the configuration saved locally on the GS748TR?

Note, yes, I know I can stand up a TFTP server in a matter of minutes, but it's the principle.

What is certainly confusing is the "odd" way (think back on the physics course at school on mechanics and dynamics.

When using the switch WebUI think you sit on the switch itself. Http download is downloading -from- the computer -to- the switch. This you can only download eg. a firmware image or a stored config file -to- the switch. This are all options you have there.

Compare with he options available on the upload option. Here I guess you will find the upload of the text config -to- your computer for retrieving it...

Even if you manage to retrieve the GS748TR text config, it's very unlikely you can upload it to a GS748T almost 20 years later - the configuration files are not compatible, please don't forget GS748TR dates back from about the year 2008.

It was possible retrieving the text config for backup reasons (by tftp push), and re-upload again to the same switch model in case of an operational mishap or upload to a replacement unit of the same model (by tftp push). The tftp operations were industry standards for several decades - the WebUI just operates a tftp client from remote, and  a tftp "server" was (and still is for many) a standard requirement for such processes - the de-facto standard principle for network device operations.

That's about all I can bring in here for now.

    -Kurt.

  • My apologies for using the wrong model screenshot. I found the documentation specific to the TR that I downloaded as well as the version I downloaded in 2013. Here is the correct screenshot from the GS748TR documentation below.

It would have been moving to identical hardware (per the original post). This was just a cold spare that hasn't been needed for over 10 years - until now. Never ran a DR fire drill to see this wouldn't work as documented.

I get what you're saying about a tftp server, but security best practice is to not stand up any services that aren't actually needed and used - deny all baseline approach. I always found a way around using one until now. My bad for the lack of a fire drill.

I have to assume the documentation is wrong. It looks like it's either a deprecated or never-implemented feature at this point.

    Thanks for the pointers.

  • Gaaaaah! Thanks for that reminder. I kept seeing upload while thinking download.

Thanks for sticking through this to closure!
