Managment-IP & Trunk on the same Port - GS108T

Hey,

I'm new to switching with netgear!

As stated in the title: is it possible to make the switch accessible via the trunk port while also being in a managment vlan?

The setup so far:

Default-VLan 1, Client-VLan 40, Printer 50 and MGMT 10.

The switch can be managed with the IP it gets from the default VLAN over the trunk port.

But i want it to be in vlan 10. When i change the managment vlan id to 10 the switch isn`t pingable anymore. The switch is set to dhcp and has a reserved ip address in both vlans (1 and 10).

I use the GS108T mainly for testing, will need an solution for the M4300-52G ProSAFE 48-port without needing to connect an laptop!

I hope my question is understandable, english is not my first language.

Thanks in advance!

Philipp

All GS108T models have - like any Netgear Smart or Managed switches (or for example any "big" managed Cisco switches) - one additional so called CPU port, which can be defined to the default untagged or a tagged network.

It does not matter on how that's VLAN does reach the switch - being over an untagged connection or over a trunk with tagged connection(s).

So the answer on the question is a yes!

Hallo, Bienvenue, Saluti, Szívesen látott  Philipp1991

Have managed to resolve what is very likely a VLAN configuration issue - either on your switch, or on whatever device you are operating the network with the trunk link to the switch on?

  • Hey,

Sorry that i didnt reply for a while.

I got it to work on our latest netgear switches from the GS308EP Series.

Still struggling with older types. Those have extra managment vlan option (System \ Managment \ Managment Interfaces) which i can't get right it seems. I'll keep you updated when i find my mistake/error.

    Cheers

    Philipp

      Heya Philipp,

The GS308EP has - like most smaller "E", "Easy Plus" (former "Plus") models no management VLAN support. the embedded uC does "listen" to any connected IP subnet with untagged IPv4 traffic only.

Correct is that select earlier Smart Managed "T", (new designated "Smart Switches") like the

List is based on wally brain, so please compare to the effective product documentation in https://netgear.com/support/

By default, the Management VLAN is configured to VLAN 1 (and all ports are by default configured as for VLAN 1, with PVID 1 - so also known as "access ports" for VLAN 1.

When you consider to configure the Management VLAN to be on a different VLAN, that VLAN"n* must be configured accordingly, either as a local access port for the VLAN"n", or reachable over a trunk connection as a [T]agged VLAN"n".

Does this help to make some progress on your VLAN config knowledge?

      Regards,

      -Kurt.
