Multiple VLANs on a single interface

Hi,

I've got a problem whereby I'm connecting multiple APs to a Netgear ProSafe GS728TP switch, and there's a requirement for SSIDs with different VLANs, but to be used on the same interface.

So far I haven't found a forum that shows it's possible. All I've seen is that VLANs can be tagged or untagged on interfaces, but nothing to say 2 or 3 VLANs can be configured for one interface.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Well, as I said: IEEE Industry Standards! Don't blame me for the vendors "hiding" the effective under some fancy UIs.

What I haven't seen so far is an example of multiple VLANs used at the same time on the same interface. Sure we can tag ports 1-5 as VLAN 10, then 6-12 as VLAN 11, but can we configure Ports 1-5 as VLAN 10 and VLAN 11?

There is nothing that stops you. On the UI I've shown above, select the VLAN, e.g. 1, 10, and 11 to configure the port memberships for ....  zero rocket science. Look here another VLAN on the very same switch:

Be careful: The UI does allow what is called an asymmetrical VLAN config on ports and LAGs - so please avoid overloading the ports with multiple Untagged settings. Reminder, the PVID does define the VLAN incoming frames on a port resp. LAG are associated to.

  • John,

Multiple VLANs can be tagged on the same port or on the same LAG of course, while for the obvious reson only one VLAN can be untagged and using the same PVID.

For adding multiple VLANs, lets say I have two SSIDs on the AP, one using VLAN 11 and the other using VLAN 12. Is it possible to have two VLANs on the same interface at the same time? I know with Cisco or Ruckus, you can configure multiple VLANs for various purposes on the same interface, but I'm looking to replicate this here.

If not, is there a solution to this problem, or does it depend on the vendor of AP?

Sure, absolute no-brainer. What does make you think this isn't possible?

What problem? It's all about IEEE standards. Of course, the APs need to support industry standard tagged (and if required one untagged) VLANs for the SSID mapping and the management.
