STP Incompatibility Between Netgear XS708T and MS510TXUP

Hi

I'm encountering a peculiar issue while trying to configure LAG (Link Aggregation Group) in my network, and I'm hoping someone here can help me figure it out.

I have a mix of Netgear switches: an XS708T, an MS510TXUP, and an S3300-28X. Currently, I'm running a stable daisy-chain setup via the SFP+ ports, but I really want to move to LAG for better performance and redundancy.

The problem is that the STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) options are drastically different between the XS708T and MS510TXUP:

XS708T and S3300-28X offer six different STP modes:
Src MAC, VLAN, EType, incoming port
Dest MAC, VLAN, EType, incoming port
Src/Dest MAC, VLAN, EType, incoming port
Src IP and Src TCP/UDP Port fields
Dest IP and Dest TCP/UDP Port fields
Src/Dest IP and TCP/UDP Port fields

MS510TXUP is limited to only two modes:
Src/Dest MAC, incoming port
Src/Dest IP and TCP/UDP Port fields

The strange thing is that LAG works perfectly fine between the XS708T and S3300-28X, but as soon as I involve the MS510TXUP, the entire network freezes. This happens in an environment with no VLANs configured.

Has anyone here encountered similar problems, or do you have any tips on how I can resolve this? I'm wondering:

Is there any way to configure LAG with these different STP options?
Is this perhaps a software limitation of the MS510TXUP, and if so, are there any plans for an update?
Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • These control selections are to select the policies on how the traffic is distributed on the two or more physical links on a LAG. Every chipset vendor and OEM does typically have different sets available - at the end of the day, a switch with a correct configured and working LAG does not care about. Unrelated to STP - however, STP must sometimes be explicitly configured and enabled on the LAG "device".
