GS108 vs. GS208 vs. GS608

I can see virtually no difference in specs between GS108/208/608 switches. Is any of these actually a superior product, or does the vendor just charge twice as much for adding 'Business class' to the branding? This purchase is for home office use, with some high-volume internal traffic plus the usual cable-bandwidth-limited external video downloads, etc.

Thanks!

  • Hi rdb,

Yes, all PROSAFE line has a higher MTBF compared to the SOHO versions and it has a lifetime hardware warranty that is why the price is a little different. Performance should be the same though they may have different hardware and chipsets, the GS208 is the newer version of the GS608 you may consider it as a cheaper hardware update.

    Thanks,

    Hello rbd,

    Welcome to the community!

All of the models mentioned are gigabit desktop switches. The GS108 is the copper gigabit version with metal casing, this is a part of the unmanaged PROSAFE switch series designed for business and is able to withstand business environments. The GS608 is the first one to be released as a SOHO type of environment compared to the first GS108 it is using only a plastic casing and there are some changes made on the chipsets being used. Ths GS208 is the newest version, the casing was redesigned and is the cheapest of all three. Technically, any of the three models can be used on a home office environment.

      Thanks, JohnRo!

Can you be any more specific about what you mean by 'designed for business and is able to withstand business environments'? Does this mean longer MTBF? Or better performance (bigger buffers, better switching technology, better jumbo packet support, etc.)?

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth spending about double for the 608 over the 208, or even slightly more for the 108, and there's just not enough info in the vendor's spec sheets to provide any plausible answer. Sounds like maybe the 208 is a newer, cheaper version of the 608 with identical performance, but even that is not particularly clear.

      Thanks again,

      Roger
