FVS318G - Weird problem
Works fine most of the time. Very infrequently the following happens - Remote (WAN) access to LAN email server begins failing. LAN systems cannot get out to the WAN. This includes the FW. FW diagnostics fails when trying to ping WAN addresses.
VPN in still works.
RDP to LAN server through VPN - works.
I can ping the firewall from the WAN (FW configured to respond to pings from my work PC).
It acts as if all incoming/outgoing communication is dead except for VPN traffic and the ping. SMTP traffic stops.
Rebooting the Comcast bridged router seems to fix everything.
Ideas as to what is going on?

Hi DennisT1,
Are you getting any error messages when the email server begins failing? Did you check the logs of the firewalls and see any unusual entries?
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,

Nothing unexpected appears in the logs of any of the LAN devices.
My 1st thought was the problem rests with the Comcast router. However it has been replaced with a newer one and the problem is still happening. My next step appears to be to replace the 318 with a pfsense FW if I can't get this sorted out.

Hi DenniT1,
What firmware version is the FVS318G running? I think it is best to run a traceroute and see where the internet breaks, kind of weird though when VPN and RDP still working.
Thanks,
