FVS318n and 2 GS108ev2 Switches

Hi All,
Example Scenario using the equipment in the title to share internet and a network printer:
7 vlans with their own ip range (dhcp served by router)
Vlan 1-5 on Switch A connected via Switch Port 1 to Router Port 1
Vlan 6 on Switch B connected via Switch Port 1 to Router Port 2
Vlan 7 on Router Port 3
Vlans 1-3 and 6, 7 need internet access
Vlans 1,2, 7 need access to printer on Switch A Port 2

Where does inter vlan networking need to be enabled to allow separate vlans to access the network printer in its own seperate vlan but -- not communicate with eachother.

If inter vlan networking needs to be activated in each vlan, what stops the vlans from communicating with eachother?
Thanks

Figured that is the model you meant :D
  • Thank you both for helping.

I take it that you mean "port-based" in Netgear speak when you say "static VLANs"?

So that would work for the VLANs / PCs / Printer directly connected to the switch?

Will another PC connected directly to the FVS318n be able to print?

If the system works and gets scaled up at some stage through more of the switches connected to the router (i.e. a switch on each router port), would they be able to print on the network in that static vlan on the first switch?

I'm thinking a UTM could be the way to go, but it seems to be overkill.
  • you can still use DHCP on each vlan from fvs so you should able to use vlan settings on gs108

UTM is subscription base which offers more than prosafe does if you need more filtering capabilities.

    I use UTM25
  • E, yes Port based. Its what I use now since I have too many other toys to upgrade my FVS336Gv2. And yes to your other question as well. It would work for any device that you hook up to the switch; PC, Printer, WAP, another switch, NAS,etc. Since the VLANS are from the switch downward, anything hooked directly up to the FVS318N will be able to see anything in ALL VLANS if you go with Port Based. That is the only quasi downside. I usually keep the router in a separate location so people can't mess with it anyways so I don't really see it as an issue.

    Thanks again.
That pretty much nails it then for the FVS318n. I purchased the 8 port Router thinking that I would be able to separate traffic using the managed switches attached to different ports on the router. If it cannot do that, the 8 ports are no real advantage in this scenario.
Looks like I need some sort of UTM.
