FVS336GV3 - Speed & Duplex Setting

Internet connection is 50x50 dedicated fiber.

WAN speed setting was set at AutoSense.

All switches and PC NIC was set to auto negotiate. PC showed 1 gbps connection.

Speedtest website would always show 50x25.

ISP advised me to change WAN port on the router to 100 mbps full duplex, they also hard coded their equipment to 100 mbps full duplex.

Question 1: I'm assuming this will only effect WAN connection, NOT the 4 LAN ports, correct?

All switches and PC NIC were still auto negotiate--speedtest website still showed 50x25.

I changed the PC NIC to 100 mbps full duplex--speedtest website showed 50x50.

Question 2: What settings on FVS336Gv3 and GS748T switch do I need to change so that all PC NIC's can remain in auto negotiate and achieve full bandwidth during speedtest, while still being able to communicate over the LAN at 1000 mbps?

    Hi pecker88,

    Welcome to the community! :)

Changing the WAN port speed will only affect the WAN connection.

With regard to the LAN ports of the FVS336Gv3, there are no settings to configure the LAN port speed.  Only the LAN port LEDs of the FVS336Gv3 are the basis if the PCs are connected either 1000Mbps, 100Mbps or 10Mbps.  See pages 18-19 of the FVS336Gv3 reference manual here.

About the LAN ports of the GS748T, access the its web-GUI then go to Switching > Ports > Port Configuration and check the Port Speed.  If Auto is selected, the duplex mode and speed is set by the auto-negotiation process.  Full duplex and 1000Mbps is advertised.  By default, Auto is selected.

    Regards,

my router is FVS336Gv3, not FVS318N

      So, here is setup #1:

ISP equipment set to 100mbps, full duplex

FVS336Gv3 router WAN port is 100mbps, full duplex

FVS336Gv3 router LAN port is auto negotiate<--not editable

GS748T switch port is Auto, Full Duplex

      laptop NIC is auto negotiate

laptop NIC status displays 1gbps speed

      website speedtest = 50x25

      So, here is setup #2:

ISP equipment set to 100mbps, full duplex

FVS336Gv3 router WAN port is 100mbps, full duplex

FVS336Gv3 router LAN port is auto negotiate<--not editable

GS748T switch port is Auto, Full Duplex

laptop NIC is 100mbps, Full Duplex

laptop NIC status displays 100mbps speed

      website speedtest = 50x50

As you can see, setup #2 gives desired WAN bandwidth, but LAN communication with local file servers, ect... will be "throttled" by the 100 mbps full duplex setting on the laptop NIC since all other hardware is gigiabit. This is what I'm trying to avoid. Any suggestions??

        Hi pecker88,

I apologize for I have indicated the wrong VPN firewall.  However, I have edited and corrected my recent response.

        Kindly answer my questions below:

        a. If you will disconnect the FVS336Gv3 then connect the laptop directly to the modem, are you able to get 50/50 internet connection?

        b. Is the modem provided by your ISP a modem-only device or a combination of modem and router?

        Regards,
