Some devices will actually use a different IP address in gateway mode.
You'd have to check with verizon how to best access it in passthrough mode.
Or simply factory reset it and start over. Leave it in router mode but disable its wifi. Then put the WAX202 in access point mode.

Which Verizon Gateway is involved here? For example https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-301824/ does say one has to use the LAN2 Ethernet port.
Other devices allow just one device connected in passthrough mode, e.g. typically a NAT router https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-213106/ a plain access point configured would eat up the one and only IP address, while other devices won't get IP addresses assigned. This could make it difficult to reach the gateway LAN IP address.
Is your WAX202 in AP or router mode? In Router mode, the WAN/Internet port must be connected to the Verizon Gateway.
