Wifi with VLAN
Hi,
I'm changing my network setup and need some advice on the Wifi part.
I have been looking at the AX Wifi AP products, but i get a bit confused.
For example: https://www.netgear.com/be/business/wifi/access-points/wax625/
These seem to support multiple SSID, show on the picture as being an Wifi extender? (Wifi to LAN) but also mention they are Wifi mesh.
Main issue:
Currently i get more and more issues with Wifi as more and more devices get connected. (+ wife/kids complaining the Wifi is not working again)
Not sure if this is because the distance between my RAX50/EAX20 devices, to many devices get connected or the Wifi mesh devices just start failing.
Installed them about 3 years ago and din't have issues (except for the Wifi speed was much slower as expected.)
These days i have to reboot the RAX50 about every 1 or 2 weeks because all 2.4Ghz devices get very slow to no connection at all. (5Ghz device still work)
Also the EAX20 devices need reboot often cause the become "detached" from the mesh ... devices connected to that extender have no longer internet and when connected to the RAX50 or other EAX20, the detached EAX20 is not reachable.
Solution (WIP):
Switching from a Wifi only setup (due to the lack of network cables in the house) to a powerline setup with managed switches and VLAN setup.
The goal is to move as much as possible Wifi connected devices to cable connections.
I also want to use normal Wifi extenders that use the LAN instead of the current Wifi 6 mesh.
I want multiple SSID or some VLAN function, so i can split traffic & ip ranges of wifi connected devices. (Home, work, IoT, ...)
Old setup:
Garage:
- ISP Modem => Netgear RAX50 bridge mode
- RAX50 => ISP powerline
Living room:
- Netgear EAX20 for Wifi Mesh
- ISP powerline => TV
Home office:
- Netgear EAX20 for Wifi Mesh
Issues:
- Bad/Slow connections
- Every device over wifi, even non wifi capable devices, wired to the EAX20
- RAX50 always seem to have >= 98% memory usage
Current setup:
Replaced the ISP powerline with a PLP2000 powerline (having more as 2 powerline devices)
Put more advanced (pfSense) firewall in between ISP router and RAX50 (more RAM, CPU, ...)
Put RAX50 in AP mode instead of bridged/router mode (Memory usage dropped to 60%)
Garage:
- ISP Modem => pfSense firewall (4x lan port on different IP range)
- Firewall => Netgear RAX50 AP Mode
- Firewall => Netgear PLP2000 powerline
Living room:
- Netgear PLP2000 => TV
- Netgear EAX20 for Wifi Mesh
Office room:
- Netgear PLP2000 => (nothing yet)
- Netgear EAX20 for Wifi Mesh
Issues:
Still bad Wifi (probably to many devices or to much traffic)
Future/Wanted setup (WIP):
Want to split devices into different IP ranges using VLAN (bought some GS108E devices)
Want to replace Wifi mesh with normal Wifi to LAN extenders
Want to split Home/Work/IoT Wifi with multiple SSID (AP + extenders for each)
Moving all "wired capable" devices from Wifi to LAN on the GS108E/Powerline
VLAN Config:
- 1000 = Home
- 1001 = Office
- 1002 = IoT
- 1003 = IP Cam
- 1004 = TV/Digibox
Garage:
- ISP Modem => pfSense firewall
- Firewall => Netgear GS108E managed switch
- Firewall or GS108E => Netgear PLP2000 powerline
- Firewall or GS108E => (unknown) Wifi AP Home Devices
- Firewall or GS108E => (unknown) Wifi AP IoT Devices
Living room:
- PLP2000 => Netgear GS108E managed switch
- GS108E => VLAN 1000: (unknown) Wifi AP/Extender Home devices
- GS108E => VLAN 1002: (unknown) Wifi AP/Extender IoT devices
- GS108E => VLAN 1003: IP Cam recorder
- GS108E => VLAN 1004: TV
Home Office:
- PLP2000 => Netgear GS108E managed switch
- GS108E => VLAN 1000: (unknown) Wifi AP/Extender Home devices
- GS108E => VLAN 1002: (unknown) Wifi AP/Extender IoT devices
- GS108E => VLAN 1001: Office devices
So, can i use the AX wifi devices to work as AP + extender with multiple SSID / VLAN?
Kind regards,
Randy
