My R6120 router keeps kicking off
I bought a Netgear R6120 (AD1200) dual band router from Wal-Mart. I didn't think anything of it, because Netgear....solid brand, RIGHT????
NOPE!!!!
So, here is what happened.
My old router kept kicking me off the internet.
It's well over ten years old, so probably needs to be replaced.
I find one at Wal-Mart for $54, not a bad price.
I take it home and set it up.
Setup is a breeze.
I DL the Netgear app to help me manage the network.
I want to change the default password to a new password for my home, so I do. There is a count down of 90 seconds for the change to take affect.
The count down ends.
All of a sudden I cannot connect to my network, crazy.
Did I do something wrong??? Is there something wrong with this BRAND NEW router that I just picked up?
So, I put it back to factory default settings and try again. Same thing happens.
I call technical support. While waiting an automated voice comes on and asks me to ' Please hold for next available Netgear ENGINEER (really???).
A few minutes later, a gal comes on line, and introduces herself (not even going to attempt to spell her name, something Indian).
I go through what is happening.
She has my do EXACTLY, what I just did.
I factory default my router AGAIN.
Set up my network and all is well.
Mind you that there is a section of the setup that the router looks for a firmware update. There was none available at this time.
She has me login to the router itself to change the PW.
My router then proceeds to kick me out. I can 'see' the network, but can not connect.
She has me reset my network again.
At this point it obvious she is not an engineer, but a script tech. And not a very good one at that.
She wants to reference some materials on her end. I told her to call me back when she is ready and I hang up.
The network seems fine for about an hour then kicks everybody off. Just out of the blue.
I try to reset it, to no avail.
I put my old router back online and I have connectivity.
End story...taking the POS back to Work. I bought a different one off Amazon.
NOPE!!!!

So, you're setting up a router using wifi? The next time you set up any router use an Ethernet cable and connect to a router port, then configure, or run set up..
- OldTeeHee46AspirantThat is EXACTLY what I did.
I ran the set up for the router using the set up wizard.
THAT was NOT the issue.
Here is the issue:
When I change the PW or SSID, the router is no longer recognized by my devices. - OldTeeHee46AspirantI did not use WIFI to set up my router.
Here is the steps I took:
1) Turned off my modem
2) Turned off my existing router
3) Removed the Ethernet cable from the back of my existing router.
4) Turned my modem back on
5) Plugged the Ethernet cable into the back of the R6120 router.
6) Turned on the R6120 router.
7) Opened up a browser page and the Netgear setup Genie appeared.
8) Set up the PW for the admin.
9) Firmware update detection screen appeared. No new FW.
10) I was connected to the router and the internet.
11) I DL the Netgear confirmation app.
12) Opened the app to change the network PW from default.
13) There was a 90s count down.
14) The router kicked ALL of my devices off.
15) Reset the router to default and set it up again. Did not change the PW
16) All was well for a few hours.
17) Got up this morning and I could not get on my network. - OldTeeHee46AspirantSo, netwrk Master.
What you're saying is that I should hook your router to my PC during setup and THAT will make all the difference????
If so then why do the directions that come with the router read differently???? - adb3treeAspirant
I'm having recurring issues with my R6120 wireless router. The internet disconnects once an hour for five or so minutes a time. It is brand new. Any help appreciated. My internet company told me to change the 2.4GHZ channel to 11 instead of Auto. Why would this fix it? It didn't fix it anyways.
