Nighthawk AC1900, Model R7000 DHCP server is faulty. Problems with Windows 10 & non-PC devices

Here is a list of issues I have expereienced with the R7000. Netgear refuses to give me a refund, and their online tech support folks just keep suggesting changes in the firmware, first to regress to version V1.0.4.30_1.1.67, and now to use beta code.

1 - The  router creates IP address conflicts, even though every device on my network is using DHCP.
2 - The Genie IP address table fails to associate the SSID with a device to which the router has already assigned an IP address.
3 - PC OS upgrade to Windows 10 caused router to disconnect other devices on the network. Thee is some associatio to the Windows 10 "one or more network protocols are missing on this computer" bug.
4 - The router randomly drops non-PC devices (LIFX bulb, Denon AVR, HP printer) from the LAN, including both wired and wireless devices?
5 - Router fails to assign an IP address to an Ethernet-connected device, and after some period of time connects but then randomly disconnects that device before finally stabilizing the connection?
6 - Genie interface think I am logged in from another device, when that is not the case?

7 - Ethernet connections to the router work at 90Mbps, but Wi-Fi connections either blocked or connecting at sub-MHz speeds.

7 - What would cause your router to deliver via Wi-Fi just 10Mbps downlink speed to my laptop, while I am sitting 2 feet from the router, and the Ethernet connection from that router is delivering 90 Mbps?

use PC and download 1.0.4.30 save and extract or unzip to PC desk top. Next! Start with a default reset. Disconnect modem and all lan connections except for a PC. Press and hold reset until power led flashes then release after router boots the PC should be rebooted and get IP 192.168.1.2 if not start over. Then login and go to update and browse to desktop and select 1.0.4.30 after it's done which could take 5 minutes the PC browser should open up,,enter setup again and change your settings then power cycle router.

Hopefully this will fix the problems, My opinion of the genie APP is that it's USELESS and shouldn't be installed.

    Good Luck

      Hi Searay

As I noted in my post, I've already done that. It only made matters wore. All the problems I listed above are occurring with the V1.0.4.30_1.1.67 firmware. The lack of SSID identification is one example of a problem that I did not see with the V1.0.6 firmware. I also did not see this new issue of Ethernet ports working while Wi-Fi connections were blocked, though the drastic slowing of Wi-Fi connections occurred in both cases.

      Thanks.

I understand you've already done it. I also feel your pain when it comes to nitgear.

It might be worth doing it again.

        Good Luck!

  • Weird.....I am running 1.0.4.30 and am having zero issues. Typing this 40' away and just did a speed test and matching my wan speed. I have TV's, 2 PC's, laptops, 2 Rokus, NAS, phones and iPads. Only issue I have is with vid files and encoding working well with DLNA.

Since this latest episode occurred, I am now unable to connect to the router from any of my Wi-Fi connections. I have seen this before, but over time, after connecting a PC over Ethernet, it went away.

      This time it is not.

Why would the router block ALL Wi-Fi connections?

I verified that I am getting the full speed (~90Mbps) through the wired connection. It also persists in blocking access to my wired Denon AVR.

        ...and we've come full circle!

This all started on a WNDR3700, when I upgraded my PC to Windows 10. I discovered that turning off my PC allowed other devices to reconnect to my LAN. Now, when I reboot that same PC, the R7000 has the same problem. The router disconnects other devices on my network, and it will even block all Wi-Fi connections.

So.. I tried turning off my PC again.. and sure enough the router now connects to other devices. After I restored some of the other connections, turning my PC back on does not disturb those connections.

Why are these Netgear routers affected by what my PC is doing???

  • What will happen if I uncheck 'Use router as DHCP Server'?

Before installing the R7000 I had assigned fixed IP numbers to certain of my wired PCs for example 192.168.1.12 etc etc....Now I notice that my main PC 192.168.1.8 has been changed to 10.0.0.8 presumably by the R7000. I seem to have a number of conflicts and wish to set all deices on the network a fixed address.

    Any advice etc....

I've been trying to solve a netgear problem for ages. My Netgear modem keeps falling over at least once within every thirty six hour period. The light is always green on the Internet connection but the R7000 glows orange.

    Again, any advice,

    Help much appreciated.

    Mike.

I also experienced the R7000 issuing invalid (i.e. not starting with 192..) IP addresses. This is indicative of the defects in their DHCP function, and I believe it was associated with devices that it denied Internet access (for reasons that are still unknown). I'm no longer using the Netgear router, so can't confirm, and I'll never purchase one of their products again. (FYI - my D-Link router is showing no such problems). If you turn off DHCP, the router should be incapable of issuing IP addresses, so you'll have to provide them manually for every device on  your LAN. I'm interested to know how that works for you, because it may still not prevent the router from corrupting the IP address table.
