Unable to change some settings on RAXE500 Router without having an active subscription to Defender!!
OK, so I had no issues with the router for the last couple of years (while I had an active subscription to the defender software. I have a 1TB fibre connection and noticed that I was mostly only getting 300mb/s download speeds, upload was 980mb/s - After troubleshooting with my ISP, it turned out that the issue was with my Netgear RAXE500 router (supposedly all singing and dancing!!)
I looked at the QoS and deactivated it - prior to this, all my connected devices had been allowed and were all showing as such in the browser connection and on the nighthawk app. But once I deactivated the QoS option, My speed increased to where it should be around 880mb/s - 950mb/s - I thought, 'great, that has solved things'
However....Now, devices on my network intermittently lose connection, when I enter the browser to check some show that they are now blocked....When i click access control, I get prompted to change this via the nighthawk app, but in the nighthawk app, this only shows a green light next to online dives, and there is no way to block or allow access for each device. I tried disabling remote access, so I could do this via the browser option, but the page briefly shows up, then disappears and i get the same message telling me to use the nighthawk app.
I never had this issue while I had the defender subscription.
So, it looks like you have to spend £80/annum just so you can change normal settings within the router which is extremely disappointing!!
As a result, I have resorted to reinstating my ISP's original router and now everything works as normal, and I am able to manage my devices easily.
I will stay well clear from netgear in future.....

** Should read Active 'Netgear Armour' subscription not defender.

Armor is NOT required to change settings on the RAXE router. Log in to the routers web page and you can make changes there. https://kb.netgear.com/980/How-do-I-log-in-to-my-NETGEAR-home-router
Routers don't sing and dance.
You can deactivate Armor on the NH app under Settings and Security.
Or do a full on Factory reset on the RAXE and setup from scratch using a PC and web browser and not use the NH app:

Oh sorry, I forgot to show my work. So yes, doing a factory reset and setup from scratch use MS Edge browser and got to the home screen, selecting on Security and then Access Controls is displaying the controls for me on my RAXE500 router and not asking me to use the NH app to configure it:
Again, Armor is NOT required to change settings on the RAXE router. Log in to the routers web page and you can make changes there. https://kb.netgear.com/980/How-do-I-log-in-to-my-NETGEAR-home-router

Well, you are wrong. I have Tried to deactivate Armour in the security setting on the NH app, but it just shows me 2 options to resubscribed and no other options!!!! So this is not possible
I have deleted the NH app, then factory reset the router, made sure security features were unchecked in settings and I am still getting the message to use the NH app to setup access control. So, your advice is false, despite you being a self proclaimed guru...and locking my thread...I assume, to stop people realising that without an Armour Subscription, you indeed are locked out of certain settings...Which is not acceptable, at the High price point for Netgear routers!
The fact that you or someone else locked my thread speaks volumes to Netgears corrupt Customer service...
In case this is deleted or locked, I have also copied this on Trust Pilot UK, which at present has a customer rating of 1.2 out of 5.0
