Lose Internet as soon as I connect OpenVPN

You all remember me configuring MR60 for VPN Service.  I established the Public IP address and DNS.  When I connect OpenVPN from my MacBook,  I lose Internet in my MacBook.  I look under Port Forwarding/ Port Triggering.  Unfortunately,  I did not capture when I have done there.  It is blank.  Is that the reason why I am not able to connect to Internet from my MacBook?

Thank you,

Mustafa

    More information, please....

When a MacBook is connected to the local network, it cannot run OpenVPN because OpenVPN is designed to provide access FROM a device on the Internet TO the local network (and devices that are connected to the local network).  Some implementations of OpenVPN have options:

Notice that my VPN is set to allow the VPN connection to be used for both the Home Network and the Internet

OpenVPN also requires that the Home Network be a different IP subnet than the local network that the remote computer (MacBook?) is connected to.

If they are both 192.168.1.x, for example, it is not clear which network  is which.

There are two distinctly different methods to connect a device on the internet to a device on the local network (LAN):

    • Forward a specific port through the router from the internet to a specific device on the LAN.
For example, TCP Port 21 is used for TFP.  Port 21 (FTP) could be forwarded to one specific device on the LAN. Thus, a s device wanting an FTP connection from the internet to an FTP server on the LAN could be forwarded through the router to that specific device.  (It cannot be connected to any other device.)
    • User OpenVPN to connect a remote device to the local LAN, where it can connect to any port on any device on the LAN.

Just to be clear, you don't need any port forwarding in the Orbi for OpenVPN.

Can you connect using your phone (when not connected to the Orbi WiFi)?
