Far satellite download speed are low

Hi

I'm looking for help to determine if I have to tweak any setting due one my satellite (3rd floor) not providing ISP download speeds, let me explain a little bit but before I will provide the system information:

Model: Orbi RBR750

Satellites: 3

Distance between each one: around 17-20 ft passing signal through wall of concrete and some wood

ISP speeds: 350 MB up and down

Router speed: 350 up and down

STLT-OFICINA; 350 MB up and down

STLT-VICTORIA: 350 MB up and down

STLT-CTO-PPAL: 350MB up and 200 MB down

This is the network map:

I had a previous ISP where I had the exact same speed and exact same setup and satellites location, all the satellites and router I was getting 350mb up and down, few months ago I changed from ISP and I get the same speed only on two of the satellites, the 3rd one I'm only getting down 200 mb and sometimes 250mb, and upload speed I'm getting the 350 mb.

What is different from old and new ISP?

The difference is that the old ISP I didn't have access to the PPPoE credentials and I was unable to set Orbi as my main router, hence I had to use 2 routers.

With this new ISP I have access to the PPPoE credentials and I was able to put the ONT as bridge and use my orbi as the main router.

I'm wondering if maybe is there any setting that I would have to tweak to get an stable 350 mb up/down in all the my network?

If previous ISP I was able to get the same speed with the same setup and satellites in the same location, I don't understand why with new ISP I'm not getting those speeds.

As an additional information, I have tested the STLT-CTO-PPAL with ethernet cable and I get the same result.

  • Concrete and steel will impede wifi signals and performances. Not much you can do if RBS are wireless with this in the mix. Better option if you can get the RBS ethernet connected to the RBR, then speeds would be better.

Weird because I had the same infrastructure, satellites are in the same position as the previous ISP, nothing has changed in that aspect, just the ISP itself

  • The post does not describe how the internet speed is being measured.

    • Using the Orbi 'app'?
    • Using the Orbi web interface?
    • Running a Speed Test app on a device that is connected to the Orbi system?

My experience with speed testing is that it can change dramatically from one test to another. (Perhaps fiber systems are more stable.  I'm on Spectrum Cable.)

I'm doing speedtest by ookla in the app from android and also from windows (when doing it via ethernet)

That measures the speed between your Android device and the Internet. It does not measure the speed between the Orbi router and the Internet or the satellites and the Internet.

If you use the Orbi app, you can measure the Internet Speed. That's the speed between the modem and the Internet.

The Orbi app also has a tile for WiFi Analytics. That will check the speed speed of the Wifi connection from the device that your Android device  is talking to.

You might like to check those measurements  to remove the Ookla app from the variables.

As CrimpOn says, a lot depends on how you measure things.

That may depend more on the Android devices you are using than the Orbi system.

Hard to tell what is going on there. What is that ONT?

Just another user with time on their hands.

  • Thanks for confirming the test protocol.  There appears to be nothing obvious that would make the results for one ISP be different than the other ISP.  In a way, it is amazing that the third satellite achieves such performance after making "two hops" (router to OFICINA, then OFICINA to PPAL),

For most of us, upload speed is not as significant as download speed.  (My Spectrum download is over 450Mbps, while the upload is only 11Mbps. - yes "eleven".  If I needed to upload gigabytes of data, it would be worthless.  In practice, it has absolutely no effect on our daily activities.)
