Netgear RBR850 requires frequent resets to correct connected without internet.

My setup:

  • Router: Netgear Orbi RBR850  AX6000
    • Firmware: V7.2.8.5_5.1.21
    • IPv6: Disabled
    • Security: Using Netgear Armor + Netgear Parental Controls
  • Satellites: Two RBS850 units
  • Home layout: 1860-era, 3 floors + basement garage, ~4,000 sq ft
  • Placement:
    • Main router is centrally located on the first floor
    • Satellite #1 is on the same level, ~100 ft away in a finished room above the garage
    • Satellite #2 is on the second floor
    • My main office is on the third floor (third floor is a finished attic)

ISP & hardware:

  • ISP: Fidium Fiber
  • Speed: 1 Gig
  • ONT/Modem: Adtran SDX632v

The issue: Several times per week, my network shows “Connected without internet” on devices. The only fix is to unplug both the modem and the Orbi router to reset everything. About 3 times per month, I end up calling Netgear Pro Support and performing a full router reset.

Question: Is there anything I can do to stabilize this system—settings, placement, configuration changes—without upgrading equipment?

Does the front LED on the RBR turn PINK or blink WHITE when this happens?

    When did this start happening?

How was the FW uppdated on the system? Auto Update or manually?

Using ISP detected DNS or custom DNS?

Does disabling Armor or SPC change this behavior?

Try putting a 1Gb non managed switch in between the ONT and RBR iwth only these two being connected to this switch?

  • The LED stays off when it happens.

The FW was initially on the auto update.  Today during the reset it was manual.

    Using ISP dynamic DNS address.

I have just disabled armor and the parental controls today.

Ok so you manually re-applied the same version of FW on the RBS then RBR?

Please try custom DNS like Cloudfare or Quad Nine as well.

  • Yes manually applied updates.  How often should I check for those?  I will look into custom DNS I have no knowledge or experience on that topic.

Well the 850/AX series is more mature than newer stuff. NG seems to release updates not as often as newer stuff. I'd take a look maybe every 6 months. There are some known issues with IPv6 across ALL AX/AXE and BE systems in regards to IPv6 functionality. We are trying to keep NG on the table with this so this will be fixed, eventually. Many issues at hand with IPv6 including the ISP level. So taking more time than expected. NG recommends keeping IPv6 disabled for those wanting newer FW versions. They are working on it.

Hoping that disabling Armor and SPC or changing to custom DNS will help on your issue though. Sometimes ISP DNS can cause problems like this.
