RBSE960 running at half speed

Hello everyone,

I have an Orbi 960 series router (RBRE960) and an add-on satellite (RBSE960), both devices are firmware version V7.2.7.15. the router and the satellite are connected via wireless backhaul one room across (around 5 meters away, through 2 concrete walls). Connection between the router and the satellite is solid (satellite shows solid blue color when connecting). my ISP is Ooredoo in Doha, Qatar, and I get 1 Gbps upload and download speeds.

I've had this setup for a couple of years, and while its very reliable, whenever I am connected to the satellite, I get only half the speed of the router (around 500 Mbps up and down) but when I am connected to the router, I get the full speed, and I cant seem to figure out why. I have tried resetting both the router and the satellite, that seems to fix the issue for about 10 days, and then the satellite speed drops down to half again.

I am attaching a screenshot of my connection statistics, it seems that the devices recognize that I am on a Gigabit connection, but the satellite does not transmit that full speed. I wanted to attach speed test screenshots of both the router and the satellite but Netgear allows only one upload per post.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it? Any guidance will be extremely appreciated.

Thank you.

Concrete thru two walls will be problematic for any MESH system over wireless. All the concrete and steel will inhibit good wifi signal travel and coverage and performance.

I recommend trying to get the RBS ethernet connected to the RBR. Either direct ethernet cable or try either MOCA or PowerLine adapters in between the RBR and RBS.

Thanks FURRYe38, As mentioned in my original post however, my satellite always connects to the router with a solid blue color, indicating no issues with the connection. I have never had any connection issues with the wireless backhaul itself (satellite disconnecting, etc.) Additionally, the setup works perfectly for about 10 days after a fresh reset with the same positions described.

Even if this was an issue due to distance/ concrete walls, why is the speed dropping to almost exactly half? my speedtests consistently score around 450 Mbps up and down when connected to the satellite. I believe something in my settings may be impacting the satellite performance.

Try a factory reset and setup from scratch and see.

Easy check of the backhaul is to hardwire in a pc/laptop to the satellite and speed test it. That way you know its only using the backhaul and not the wireless front haul for the test. But I'd agree with everyone else on this, the 2x concrete walls are causing your slow down. They're great at blocking wifi.

But even if it is lower, 500mbps is still more than anything most users are going to be able to use. Streaming 4k only takes 25-50mbps. So unless you're moving massive data amounts, 500mbps is still plenty of speed
