Granular 2.4GHz Power Control & mDNS Optimization for Orbi 970 (RBS970)
Dear NETGEAR Engineering Team,
As a user of the flagship Orbi 970 (RBE970) system, I am writing to express frustration over the lack of advanced radio management in the current firmware. In high-density urban environments, the current software limitations are causing significant issues.
I would like to highlight two major pain points:
- Excessive 2.4GHz Power from Satellites The 2.4GHz radio on the RBS970 satellites is far too powerful for modern apartments. Since we cannot adjust the transmit power specifically on the satellites, it creates massive interference. Sensitive IoT devices like HomePods and Dyson air purifiers suffer from constant "No Response" or "Updating" status because they are caught between two overly strong signals.
Request: Please provide an option to completely disable the 2.4GHz radio on specific satellites or allow independent power adjustment (Low/Medium/High) for the 2.4GHz band.
- mDNS Broadcast and Discovery Issues mDNS is the backbone of modern smart homes (AirPlay, HomeKit, Matter). The current implementation across the mesh backhaul is unstable. In a "Strong Backhaul" scenario, the mDNS heartbeat often fails to reach the client device if the satellite is too close to the router, causing AirPlay lag and discovery failures.
Request: Optimize mDNS reflector/snooping logic to ensure seamless discovery across the 6GHz backhaul.
We purchased the Orbi 970 for its Wi-Fi 7 future-proofing, but we are being held back by software limitations. Please give us the control we need to manage our high-density home networks.
Waiting for a long-overdue firmware update.
Best regards, A Frustrated Orbi 970 User

You'll need to post this here to make requests to NG:

Are you having a problem with the Orbi 970 series system? If so, please be more descriptive and give details.
Backhaul is only between the RBR and RBS. Having not enough RBS or too many RBS and distances inbetween the RBR and RBS can cause problems with the backhaul.
Please review this PDF guide on some troubleshooting information for Orbi systems:

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.
How many RBS are deployed?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

Currently have a 973 system online. Not seeing any issues with backhaul and smart IoT devices connected. 50+ devices.
5000 sq ft home. Two RBS deployed. Can get away with one RBS. Wireless connected.
