Orbi 970 - Crash after Speedtest

Dear Commuinity,

In my RBE971 system with 1 satelllite with wireless backhaul, I have regular crashes /reboots of the RBE971 every 1-2 days.

While I was testing the behaviour , I  also saw that I can easly crash the router via SpeedTest using router's web page or Orbi App.

Basically, you execute the sppeed test consecutively via the router's web page or Orbi application.

In my device, usually after 4-5 executions, RBE971 restarts (white linking led)  or sometime it loose the network (magenta led)

My internet connection is 8Gbit and before the crash, SpeedTest usually shows around 7 - 8 Gbits of speed on both upload and download,as it should be.

I just want to ask if you also have same behaviour or I'm the only one... I suspect that the high speed is overheating the RBE971 and it crashes... I also put a fan on the top of the RBE971 and redone same tests, router charshed again but after 9-10  consecutive speedtests execution.

Any idea ? Can you also try the same test and update this topic with your results ?

PS : I already have a ticket with NG Support, they accepted the RMa for router only (not the kit), I'm waiting the delivery of the replacement unit in few weeks.

  • I received today the replacement router RBE971 and configured as AP with my 1 existing satellite.
NG sent only the router and I used my existing power adapter (with new design and increased amperage)

I have executed intensively Speedtest via WebUI and Orbi iOS app. Until now I couldn’t crash the new router. See below consecutive Speedtest via app

  • This is the latest public firmware 9.12.5.3 and the daily restarts happenned in all fw that I've used.

However I was never tried consecutive SpeedTests to crash the 971. With this Speed Test, i'm 100% sure that RBE will crash.

The ethernet cable between the RBE971 and modem is CAT6 and I tested also 2 other cables.  Same problem.

Normally I use 971 in AP mode, but I tested both AP and Router mode: same RBE crashes  always after consecutive speedtests.

The crash happpens during the Speedtest, after few successfull speedtests, WebUI become unresponsive and 971 reboots (white blinking led) or it became unresponsive with magenta led (don't answer to pings)

And this is reproducible in every try...

    • What is the brand and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Also lets turn OFF all logging on the RBRs web page as well under Advanced tab/Admin/Logging. Uncheck all boxes and apply the change.

After 5 consecutive speed test this morning on my RBR971 saw now issues. I then checked the system uptime under debug page and show stats for any changes there. Nothing. I'll try again later today after work.

Keep in touch with NG support and lets see if the RMA RBR sees same issue.

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?

I don't have 8Gb Up and Down here. 1Gb and 50Mbps. Just ran 5 speed tests using the RBRs web UI using MS-Edge. All successful. I had to leave so not sure if the crash happens soon after or later on. I didn't see any front LEDs as I left today. I'll check later on.

OK, I just tested, as I have a 971 router and 2-970 satellites. I have Xfinity 2100/300 service.

      Pre test:

      router mem- 1079MB   up: 4d 4h 14:15     cpu: 4.68%

5 speeds tests via router admin web page:

      2333.16 - 358.23

      2409.49 - 358.03

      2268.65 - 356.48

      2214.64 - 357.82

      2105.62 - 350.49

      router mem - 1076   up 4d 4h 20:13  cpu: 4.69%

5 speed tests via Orbi app on iPhone 16 Pro Max:

      2263.83 - 356.02

      2306.80 - 355.47

      2372.85 - 353.93

      2336.61 - 355.74

      2348.69 - 357.28

      router mem: 1074  up: 4d 4h 26:15  cpu: 4.70%

So no reboots for me. I also verified through the router port uptimes, that internet was not lost during the test:

So maybe this is an issue with the high speeds at least one user her has posted - 7-8 Gbps (that is if it's not a hardware failure). Not sure the speeds of the other user who reported the problem...
