RBE871 slow speed
Hi All,
just installed my brand new RBE871 and I’m getting a constant 94MB download/upload speed. If I connect my laptop to the ethernet port of the wall I get 850MB download.
I have a main router in my house (FritzBox!5590) provided by the ISP, which delivers connectivity to the entire walls, this device is wifi disabled.
the Orbi is intended to deliver wifi connectivity.
Wires in the walls are CAT6A.
each wired port in the house gives me high speed, just wifi from Orbi is slow at 94MB. I already downloaded the update firmware and restarted the Orbi a few times.
I’m not a tech guy. Thanks for suggestions.

Could you please use the web interface to display the Advanced Tab and click on Show Statistics:
What does the router display for the WAN port?
- lucapeloAspirant
It shows 100M/Full. I restarted the 871 and went to 1000M - immediately the download speed went to 960Mb via WiFi (both on my MacBook and my iPhone 13). Was so happy.
Unfortunately the day after, WAN shows again 100M/Full - and the wifi speed is back limited to 93Mb.
How to keep the WAN port at 1000M/Full (even after a power cycle of the Orbi)?
thanks

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

Try option #2 first...
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.
If you happen to have a non managed 1Gb LAN switch, connect this switch in between the ISP modem and the RBR and see if connection rate changes while connected to this LAN switch.

What wifi chipset is in the laptop?

How many RBS are deployed?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

my FritzBox! 5590 doesn’t allow me to use the bridge mode. It’s wifi disabled.
How many RBS are deployed? At the moment just the router 871 without its own satellite it’s still in the box
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft? 140 sq meter
RBS wireless or ethernet connected to the RBR?
Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, not enabled yet
Smart Parental Controls or Circle, disabled
IPv6, disabled
Traffic Meter, don’t know how to manage this service
As mentioned before, see my post above, I was able to solve the problem for a while just restarting the Orbi router from the web - while connected to it via an Ethernet cable. Today unfortunately the WAN port is still limited to 100M/Full.
thanks for your help

Unfortunately the day after, WAN shows again 100M/Full - and the wifi speed is back limited to 93Mb.Ethernet hardware has a built-in feature called Autonegotiation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonegotiation) The Show Statistics box reports the speed that the Ethernet hardware on the Fritzbox and the Orbi WAN port have determined to be the maximum speed that the link can support. What this suggests is "something is wrong" with the cable pathway between the Fritzbox and the Orbi WAN port. This is often a problem with the termination of one of the RJ45 jacks or RJ45 plugs. Perhaps something is loose and although it made good contact when first connected, it moves a bit over time. There are 8 wires in an Ethernet connection. If even one wire loses contact, it is impossible to get 1000M/Full.
When the link has been negotiated to 100M/Full, it is impossible to get a speed higher than about 94Mbps. No "settings". The only solution is to get the connection to be 1000M/Full.
I bought a 100ft. Ethernet cable from Amazon for under $20US for just such situations. Stringing it through the house from Fritzbox to Orbi should result in 100M/Full that stays as long as the cable is connected. (and the family does not revolt) Finding the fault can be a nightmare. But if the temporary cable works and the existing wiring does not......

Thanks. This is a brand new house, where I’m going to move. All the cables and connections have been installed a few days ago. I have 2 RJ45 ports available in this room. Socket 1 and socket 2, so to speak.
wires in the wall are CAT 6A.
If I use a patch cable available now, CAT7 to connect my MacBook directly to Socket 1 or Socket 2… the speed is 900+Mb
If I use the same patch cable to connect the WAN port of the Orbi… I had 100Mb speed, them 1000Mb for a while.
Still too many workers in the house lately… I’ll try this week again with a different patch cable, checking accurately the RJ45 plugs into the FritzBox (upstream) and into the Orbi (downstream). It’s pretty odd the problem occurs with the WAN port of the Orbi but not with the wired connected MacBook…

And the ISP modem is directy connecting to the RBR and not running thru house wiring thru the walls?
If the modem can not be bridged, then be sure to use the modems DMZ for the IP address given to the RBR.

The ISP modem - FritzBox 5590 - has 4 RJ45 ports available. Each one has a CAT 6A cable connected to different rooms in the house, through the wall.the Orbi is plugged into one of these wall RJ45 sockets via a patch cable CAT 7.
Sorry I’m not a tech guy, can you point me to find how access/set the modem DMZ (I’m not aware of what DMZ is indeed).
thank you

Any chance you can bring the RBR to same room as ISP modem and connect it directly behind the modem?
Will need to look at the modems web page for the DMZ or IP Pass thru feature. Look at the Mfr user manual or ask ISP support for help on that.
- lucapeloAspirant
I have found this…
My concern is to open a can of worms if I try to set the modem by myself!
- FURRYe38Guru - Experienced User
Look thru to see if there is any thing about DMZ or IP pass thru.
DMZ may not be available as per this: https://support.edpnet.be/hc/en-us/articles/17163881094034-Can-I-configure-DMZ-on-my-FRITZ-Box
Mentions something about Exposed Host though. I'd contact the ISP for help on this as well.

There are now two separate topics under discussion:
- Why the Orbi router WAN port is connecting at 100Mbps rather than 1000Mbps.
- The optimal way to configure "two routers" in one house. (Fritzbox and Orbi)
It might be worth spending a few minutes to examine the WAN port RJ45 jack. Are all eight of those tiny wires the same? (nothing bent or out of alignment?)
If "the only thing that changes" is the CAT7 patch cable plug is moved from the MacBook to the Orbi WAN port, that would be the first place to look.
(perhaps it is technically possible for the MacBook Ethernet adapter to negotiate gigabit speed and the Orbi Ethernet Adapter to negotiate 100Megabit speed, but that seems unlikely.)
I find it really strange that the Orbi reports different connection speeds from one minute to another.)

Lets work on getting the WAN connection rate fixed first.

Appreciate so much your help, I’ll be able to test your suggestions within the end of the week. I’ll report you back soon. Thanks.

Hi CrimpOn and FURRYe38,
today I made a few tests.
Looking at the Advanced Tab on the web interface the WAN Port speed was 100M/Full, as supposed. The Orbi was plugged into a RJ45 wall socket via a CAT7 patch cable.
- I tried different RJ45 wall sockets around the room - still 100M/Full - While, plugging the MacBook directly into the exact same RJ45 wall sockets the speed is 1Gb (960Mbps testing the wired connection by Oakla Speedtest). Does the MacBook adaptor negotiate at 1Gbps while the Orbi WAN port negotiate at 100Mbps? It seems like that.
- I tried plugging/unplugging the patch cable into the RJ45 was sockets, into the Orbi WAN port and even into the FritzBox! 5590 router - still 100M/Full
- I disabled the Traffic Meter - still 100M/Full while Ipv6 was already disabled and Armor is enabled but I couldn't found how to disable it.
- I unplugged the wall wart in order to power cycle the Orbi871 - still 100M/Full on the WAN port
Then I made exactly the same thing I've already done last week: from the web interface I restarted the Orbi 871. Bingo!
For the second time suddenly the Orbi WAN Port showed 1000M/Full and accordingly (wired or wifi) started to go at 960mbps speed.
It seems that the restart command via the web interface can repeatedly "unlock" the WAN port from 100M/Full to 1000M/Full. More than a tiny wire problem along the RJ45 ports or jacks, it seems that the Autonegotiation is influenced by the Orbi's WAN port in some way. Without a physical action to cables and plugs, the restart process launched from the web interface changes the WAN port speed.
Pretty odd but that is what happens. Again.
Now the speedtest is showing around 960Mbps consistently... can't say if this scenario will last forever - I'm afraid in a few day I will fall back in the previous slow WAN port scenario.
Any idea?

If your still getting 100Mb with the RBR connected to wall sockets and reboot clears it. Seems like possible odd issue between the RBR WAN port and cabling in these walls.
Need to test the RBR directly connected to the ISP Modem directly behind the modem and see if the same behavior is still seen at the RBR, if so, then problem maybe at the RBR. Let us know what you find here.
Happen to have a NON managed 1Gb LAN switch by chance?
