Re: RBR50 Satellite disconnects from router when using Ethernet port

I know this is an old thread, but I have exactly the same problem, i.e. I have sky q with one mini box and am trying to use a powerline adapter to connect to both the main sky q box and the sky q mini (one adapter connected to the Orbi router, one connected to the sky q mini, one connected to an orbi satellite upstairs and one connected to the sky q box upstairs.  When I connect the satellite to the powerline adapter, the connection to the satellite shows that it has a wired connection, then speeds slow and then it eventually disconnects.

I tried resetting the powerline adapters, which worked for about two days as expected, but then last night not only did the satellite start showing a wired connection but the orbi router went offline, and I had to reset the whole Orbi mesh again (the router + 3 satellites).

I have read on many forums that powerline adapters connected to the sky q boxes is the best way to resolve the issues with sky q creating its own mesh network that interferes with the orbi mesh, but it is causing problems with the orbi.

Any advice?

  • What Orbi model system do you have? You tagged a 970 series which differs from the older 50 series.

  • Seems like the power line adapters and any ethernet cabling in between the RBR and RBS need to be checked.

Consults the manufacturer of the power line adapters for support help and information regarding there product.

    Swap adapters around.

Try the power line adapters while in same room with the RBR and RBS to check stability.

    CAT6A STP cabling is recommended.

RBS if ethernet connected to the RBR have to be connected using one of the following configurations:

If your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

    Try option #2 first...

Thank you for getting back to me. I do not have a ISP routr connected to the Orbi, rather I have an ONT connected directly to the Orbi, which is acting as router. So there are no antennas to disable. Cables are all CAT 6A and all brand new.

The configuration I have is Orbi router to TP link powerline to ethernet port downstairs and TP link powerline to satellite to ethernet port upstairs. I do not see why this is confusing the satellite and router, especially since it worked fine for a few days.

Possible some with with in the TP-Link adapters are causing problems. If the RBS works find directly connected to the RBR, then this points to the TP-Link adpaters not providing good services in between the RBR and RBS. There is some specific data flow that happens in between the RBR and RBS when ethernet connected. If this is blocked, then the RBS can not work right. You might try some NETGEAR branded power line adapters to see if this may help.

Possible some power line interferences in between the RBR and the in wall power as well. Could be something you have plugged in to the power on a wall out let that maybe causing noise on the line.

Try the RBS wirelessly connected to the RBR if it will connect OK.

This discussion began with trying to resolve an issue with Sky Q devices by using Powerline adapters, but now the Sky Q devices have disappeared from the discussion.  It would help to understand how everything is connected

    • What exactly is connected to a Powerline adapter?
    • Are the Sky Q devices connected to anything besides the Powerline adapters?
    • Does the system function correctly when the Orbi units are not connected to Powerline?

Thank you for raising this! All I'm trying to achieve is to get my Sky Q boxes to work by using powerline adapters.

My current set up is an Adtran ONT connected to Orbi 970 in router mode downstairs. I connected a TP link powerline to the Orbi router via ethernet port and connected another powerline to the sky q box downstairs. Upstairs, I connected a powerline adapter to one of the orbi 971 satellites in my office via ethernet port and another powerline adapter in my bedroom to the main sky q box. The downstairs circuit is differerent to the one upstairs.

The sky q boxes are not connected to anything apart from the powerline adapters.

When the Orbi units are connected to the powerlines, the satellite starts showing that it has a wired connection and speeds slow, then stop altogether. I did reset the powerline adapters and all was well for about one day. Then, one evening the satellite connected to the powerline went magenta and started showing a wired connection again in the UI.  i went downstairs to check on the router, and it too had gone magenta. In the end, I had to remove the powerlines and reset the entire system to get the router to connect back to the ONT.

Today, I connected one powerline to the satellite upstairs, but nothing downstairs and bizarrely it has made sky work again, which is odd because I don't have the powerline connected downstairs. In trhe UI, it shows both boxes as having a wired connection, so I tried to turn off the 2.4 and 5 ghz on the boxes, but that made them stop working.
