Replacing Quickline FWA router (Zyxel EX3301-T0) with Orbi R970

Hi all,

I've just had Quickline FWA installed at my house (UK), they use their own 5G network. They installed the following:

Zyxel NR7101 installed outside
Zyxel EX3301-T0 router inside
POE plug for the NR7101

They said that I can use my own router if I like, but I need to set it to DHCP, MTU 1500, and turn off VLAN. I've tried this and it doesn't work. Though another one of their operators emailed me the following, but I think they are oddly just telling me the settings for their installed Zyxel EX3301-T0 router, which is set to IPoE.

"

Three horizontal lines top right->Network settings->Broadband->Pen and paper icon far right
General:
-Name & Type is pre selected
-Mode: Routing
-Encapsulation: IPoE
-IPv4/IPv6 Mode: IPv4 Only

VLAN: Disabled
MTU: 1500

IP Address: Select
Obtain an IP Address Automatically

DNS Server: Select
Obtain DNS Info automatically

Routing Feature:
-Enable 3, only Fullcone NAT disabled

6RD: Disabled and

DHCPC Options: Should be blank."

I've hit a bit of a dead end because they have said that I should just make sure the Orbi is set to DHCP, VLAN is off, and the MTU is 1500 (which the orbi won't go as high as this).

Anyone got any idea on what I could try?

I know its possible because someone else has done it:

I'm going to ask them on that forum too, but I thought I would check in here too.

Thanks in advance

  • Your wanting to replace the ISP Zyxel EX3301-T0 router inside with the Orbi system?

You'll need to make contact with the ISP and have them help you to ensure any ISP configurations are correct and correctly put to the Orbi router.

The outside Zyxel NR7101 may need to be power cycled after the ISP router is disconnected and the Orbi router is connected and configured.

Can also try the ISP router with it's wifi disabled and the Orbi connected to it and use the ISP routers DMZ for the Orbi router.

Hmmm, this is interesting. If i did your 2nd solution would I get any downsides, connecting the orbi to their router, like double NAT?

I may have to go this way because Quickline helped for a bit and then just stopped and said, if its not working, then that's a you problem (but in a kind of nicer way 🙂

      Cheers

If you use the ISP routers DMZ/IP-Passthru for the RBR in Router mode, double NAT will be avoided.

I'd make contact with the ISP have have them help with this if you want to go from there ONT directly to the Orbi RBR.

My first guess is that the Orbi router should be a direct swap for their WiFi router.  Move the Ethernet cable to the Orbi.

        Reboot the external unit.

        Power up the Orbi.

Connect to Orbi to begin configuration.

Might correspond with that "ant person" to see if there were any specific steps.

This will most likely result in a typical "Double Router" situation which can interfere with specific internet applications. (internet search for details).  If this is a concern for your situation, then the IP Passthrough option on the external router appears to be the way to deal with that. (page 81 of the User Guide).
